Sakapulteko belongs to the K'ichean branch of the Mayan family and is closely related to K'iche'. It is spoken in the municipality of Sacapulas, on the Río Negro (Chixoy) in Quiché, where the town is known for its traditional salt production. It is one of Guatemala's officially recognised Mayan languages.

Sakapulteko has a small number of speakers, and many residents of Sacapulas also speak K'iche' and Spanish. It has sometimes been regarded as a variety of K'iche', though it shows distinctive features of its own.

How we help

Sakapulteko services

SILA Linguists®

Sakapulteko interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® supports immigration and asylum services, healthcare providers and community and education projects working with speakers of Sakapulteko. This K'ichean Mayan language, closely related to K'iche', is spoken in the municipality of Sacapulas on the Río Negro (Chixoy) in Quiché, Guatemala, a town known for its traditional salt production. Sakapulteko has a small number of speakers and is officially recognised as a Mayan language in Guatemala, although it is sometimes regarded as a variety of K'iche'.

Interpreting arrangements agreed with the client

Many residents of Sacapulas also speak K'iche' and Spanish, so we begin by asking the client which languages they speak and how well. For a Sakapulteko speaker who is also fluent in K'iche', a K'iche' interpreter may be suitable; others will prefer Spanish. For legal and medical matters we check comprehension at the start of the session and keep a written note of the arrangement agreed with the client, so that the choice is transparent if it is ever questioned.

Where Sakapulteko itself is needed, remote work is the most practical way to reach an interpreter: a video session in the SILA Linguists® app or your own meeting software, or a telephone connection that can be arranged at any hour. Asylum interviews and health appointments are interpreted consecutively, with clear, short exchanges, and a male or female interpreter can be requested.

Sakapulteko translation and certified documents

Sakapulteko is written using Guatemala's official Mayan alphabet, but written materials are limited and mainly educational. Translation projects therefore involve a community language specialist to make sure terminology and spelling match local usage, whether the text is a health leaflet, a school resource or a community notice. Where literacy is limited, a recorded version read by a Sacapulas speaker often works better than print alone.

Official documents from Guatemala are issued in Spanish. We translate and certify them into English, each with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers.

Transcription and language analysis

We transcribe recordings in Sakapulteko with time codes and an English version, labelling passages in K'iche' or Spanish. Because Sakapulteko sits so close to K'iche', any asylum case requiring language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) needs specialists who understand the distinctive features of Sacapulas speech, and we can arrange such an analysis.

Where we can help in Sakapulteko

Our vetted, trained and qualified Sakapulteko linguists can support immigration and asylum services, hospitals and clinics, schools and community education projects, and researchers. SILA Linguists® provides one coordinator for each request, and every linguist signs a confidentiality agreement and follows UK GDPR, which matters in a single small municipality where speakers know one another.
