Face-to-face
Zapotec interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Zapotec is one of the largest and most diverse Indigenous language groups of Mexico, centred on the state of Oaxaca. Because Zapotec varieties differ so much, SILA Linguists matches each interpreter to the speaker's home community.
Diidxazá
zapZapotec belongs to the Zapotecan branch of the Oto-Manguean family, together with Chatino. It is spoken across Oaxaca, in the Central Valleys around Oaxaca City, the Sierra Norte, the Sierra Sur and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where Isthmus Zapotec (Diidxazá) is widely used in towns such as Juchitán. Large Zapotec communities live in Mexico City and the United States.
Zapotec is a group of many related languages, and many are not mutually intelligible: a speaker from the Isthmus may not understand a speaker from the Sierra Norte. Zapotec languages are tonal. The Zapotec civilisation of Monte Albán produced one of the earliest writing systems in Mesoamerica.

SILA Linguists® provides Zapotec interpreters and translators for courts, immigration and asylum services, maternity and healthcare providers, agricultural employers and labour organisations, and education and cultural projects. Zapotec belongs to the Zapotecan branch of the Oto-Manguean family and is spoken across Oaxaca, in the Central Valleys, the Sierra Norte, the Sierra Sur and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with large communities in Mexico City and the United States.
Zapotec is a group of many related languages, many of which are not mutually intelligible: a speaker from the Isthmus may not understand one from the Sierra Norte. A Zapotec interpreter from another region may speak a variety the client does not understand. Always tell us the client's town, and we arrange a short conversation between interpreter and client before the session to confirm the match.
Relay through Spanish is common. We provide Zapotec interpreters in person where local linguists are based, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform, and by telephone around the clock. Hearings and labour investigations are interpreted consecutively, and women attending maternity care can ask for a female interpreter.
Zapotec languages are tonal, and orthographies differ between varieties. Isthmus Zapotec, or Diidxazá, spoken in towns such as Juchitán, has a well-established written tradition with poetry, newspapers and education materials, while other varieties are written far less. We agree the variant and spelling before translating, and for audiences in several regions we may recommend more than one version or recorded audio.
Mexican civil documents are issued in Spanish. Our certified English translations of them carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. We also prepare Spanish-to-English translations of Oaxacan documents with a signed certificate of accuracy for US immigration.
The Zapotec civilisation of Monte Albán produced one of the earliest writing systems in Mesoamerica, and Zapotec culture remains a rich subject for museums and researchers. We transcribe interviews, recorded evidence and cultural recordings with time codes and an English version, noting the variety. For asylum cases where origin is questioned, language analysis (LADO) can be arranged.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Zapotec linguists can support courts and solicitors, immigration and asylum services, hospitals and maternity units, agricultural employers and labour rights organisations, schools, universities and museums. SILA Linguists® appoints one coordinator per case, and every linguist works under an NDA and UK GDPR. Zapotec speakers in the United States can be supported in immigration court, during attorney consultations, at hospitals and in school meetings, matched to Valley, Sierra or Isthmus speech.
