Cora (Náayeri) interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Cora, known to its speakers as Náayeri, is a Uto-Aztecan language of the Sierra del Nayar in the Mexican state of Nayarit. Cora and Náyeri are two names for the same language. SILA Linguists can arrange interpreting and translation.
Náayeri
Cora belongs to the Corachol branch of the Uto-Aztecan family, together with its closest relative, Huichol (Wixárika), and is more distantly related to Nahuatl. It is spoken mainly in the municipality of Del Nayar in Nayarit, in communities such as Jesús María, Santa Teresa and Mesa del Nayar, and in neighbouring parts of Durango.
Cora is not uniform: it has several variants, including those of El Nayar and Santa Teresa. The Náayeri are known for ceremonial traditions such as Holy Week celebrations that blend Indigenous and Catholic elements.

SILA Linguists® arranges Cora interpreters, translators and transcribers for clinics, legal teams, educators, cultural organisations and community consultations. Cora, whose speakers call themselves Náayeri, belongs to the Corachol branch of the Uto-Aztecan family, alongside Huichol. It is spoken mainly in the municipality of Del Nayar in Nayarit, in communities such as Jesús María, Santa Teresa and Mesa del Nayar, and in neighbouring Durango. Cora varies from community to community.
Cora has several variants, including those of El Nayar and Santa Teresa. We ask for the client's community so we can find the closest match. Huichol is Cora's nearest relative, but Huichol speakers do not reliably understand Cora, so a Huichol interpreter is not a substitute.
Plenty of Cora speakers use Spanish comfortably, but older people and residents of remote mountain communities may need Cora. Cora interpreters usually join by video, on the SILA Linguists® app or a conferencing tool you prefer, or by phone at any time, with Spanish relay for English-language settings. Hospital appointments, legal interviews and consultation meetings work best consecutively, and a woman or man can interpret if the client asks.
Written Cora uses Roman letters and spelling developed for bilingual education, and conventions vary between communities. We confirm the variant and readership before translating health information, consultation documents, school materials or cultural texts, and can add an audio version for readers who prefer to listen. Names of communities such as Jesús María or Mesa del Nayar are kept in their established spellings so that records match.
Official papers from Nayarit or Durango are in Spanish, and our certified English versions of them are signed with a declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals and admissions teams.
The Náayeri are known for ceremonial traditions, such as Holy Week celebrations that blend Indigenous and Catholic elements, which attract researchers, museums and film-makers. We transcribe interviews, narratives and recorded events with time codes and an English version, noting the variety, and prepare English or Spanish subtitles for documentary and educational video.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Cora linguists can support hospitals and community health programmes, courts and legal advisers, schools and education projects, cultural organisations and community consultations in Nayarit and Durango. Each request stays with one SILA Linguists® coordinator, and our Cora linguists sign non-disclosure agreements and observe UK GDPR, respecting the privacy of close-knit mountain communities.
