How we help

Huichol (Wixárika) services

SILA Linguists®

Huichol (Wixárika) interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Huichol interpreting, translation and transcription for healthcare teams, legal advisers, educators and cultural heritage projects. Wixárika, as speakers call their language, belongs to the Corachol branch of the Uto-Aztecan family, with Cora. It is spoken in the mountains where Jalisco, Nayarit, Durango and Zacatecas meet, in communities such as San Andrés Cohamiata, Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán and San Sebastián Teponahuaxtlán, and by families who have moved to Tepic and Guadalajara.

Wixárika interpreting that respects community life

Language use remains strong among the Wixárika. Many are bilingual in Spanish, but some older people and children from mountain communities speak little Spanish. Health and legal interpreting should take account of ceremonial obligations and community authority structures, which can influence decisions and scheduling, and our interpreters bring that awareness to every session. The northern, southern and eastern variants are mutually intelligible, so matching is less critical than for some languages, but we still note the community.

Our Huichol interpreters usually join by video, via the SILA Linguists® app or a platform you choose, with Spanish relay where needed, and telephone interpreting can be booked at any time. Hospital consultations and legal interviews proceed consecutively. A female or male interpreter is available on request, and Cora interpreters are never offered as a substitute. For families living in Tepic or Guadalajara, we also check whether Spanish has become the stronger language for younger members.

Huichol translation and certified translation

Wixárika is written with Roman letters plus conventions such as ɨ, or u with a diacritic, for a central vowel and x for a retroflex sound, as in Wixárika itself. Conventions vary between publishers, so we confirm your readers' expectations and check that fonts display these characters correctly in print, websites and subtitles.

Official documents from Mexico are in Spanish. Certified English translations of them carry a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and universities, and by employers.

Transcription for heritage and research

The Wixárika are known internationally for yarn paintings, beadwork and the annual pilgrimage to the sacred desert of Wirikuta in San Luis Potosí. Museums, galleries, documentary makers and researchers can ask us to transcribe interviews and narratives, with time codes and an English rendering, and to subtitle film in English or Spanish, treating sacred knowledge with appropriate care.
