Ixil interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Ixil is a Mayan language of the Cuchumatán highlands in northern Quiché, Guatemala, spoken in Nebaj, Chajul and Cotzal. SILA Linguists provides Ixil interpreting and translation, matched to the client's town.
Ixil
ixlIxil belongs to the Mamean branch of the Mayan family, with Mam, Awakateko and Tektiteko. It is spoken in three municipalities, Santa María Nebaj, San Gaspar Chajul and San Juan Cotzal, often called the Ixil region. Each town has its own variety, with differences in pronunciation and vocabulary, and the Nebaj and Chajul varieties in particular are recognised as distinct.
Ixil is one of Guatemala's officially recognised Mayan languages. People from the Ixil region have migrated to Guatemala City, Mexico and the United States, and Ixil interpreting is needed in immigration and legal settings abroad.

SILA Linguists® provides vetted, trained and qualified Ixil interpreters, translators and transcribers for asylum lawyers, tribunals, therapists, clinicians and human rights investigators. Ixil, a Mamean language of the Mayan family, is spoken in three municipalities of Quiché, Guatemala: Santa María Nebaj, San Gaspar Chajul and San Juan Cotzal, known together as the Ixil region. People from the region have migrated to Guatemala City, Mexico and the United States, and Ixil interpreters are needed in immigration and legal settings abroad.
Each Ixil town has its own variety, and the Nebaj and Chajul varieties in particular are recognised as distinct. Speakers from different towns generally understand each other, but local vocabulary matters in detailed testimony, so we ask whether the client is from Nebaj, Chajul or Cotzal and match accordingly where possible.
The Ixil region was severely affected during Guatemala's armed conflict, and clients may be describing traumatic experiences in an asylum interview, a therapy session or a human rights statement. Our interpreters are prepared for such testimony and keep strict neutrality, conveying exactly what is said. A qualified Ixil interpreter is most easily reached remotely, on screen through the SILA Linguists® app or your own video service, or by phone at any hour. Survivors may prefer a woman, or a man, and we respect that choice.
Written Ixil uses Guatemala's official Mayan alphabet, marking glottal sounds with apostrophes, and materials exist for bilingual education and community use. We translate witness statements, therapy resources, information leaflets and letters into and out of English, keeping town and family names consistent across a case file. Spanish records from the Ixil region that will go before US immigration officers come with a signed certificate of accuracy from the translator.
Identity cards and civil records from Quiché are in Spanish; we render them into English and sign each translation as complete and correct for immigration judges, the Home Office and other authorities.
Human rights documentation, research interviews and recorded evidence in Ixil become time-coded transcripts with English alongside and each speaker clearly identified. Dates, place names and the names of villages around Nebaj, Chajul and Cotzal are checked carefully, because they often matter most when testimony is examined later. Where an applicant's origin is challenged, specialist LADO analysis of their Ixil can be arranged.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Ixil linguists can support asylum caseworkers, barristers and solicitors, NHS trauma and mental health teams, human rights groups and researchers. SILA Linguists® keeps one coordinator on each case, and Ixil linguists are held to NDAs and UK GDPR, giving survivors the confidentiality they need. Ixil interpreters can be booked for US removal proceedings, credible fear interviews, attorney calls and public health clinics, keeping the Nebaj, Chajul or Cotzal variety in mind.
