Ayoreo is one of two living languages of the Zamucoan family; the other is Chamacoco (Ishir), also spoken in Paraguay. In Paraguay, Ayoreo communities are found mainly in the departments of Alto Paraguay and Boquerón, and in Bolivia in the department of Santa Cruz. The name Moro, once used by outsiders, is considered outdated.

Many Ayoreo groups had little sustained contact with national society until the second half of the twentieth century, and the language remains in strong everyday use in many communities. Spanish is the main second language, and some Ayoreo in Paraguay also speak Guarani. Ayoreo has an unusual grammar, with distinctive noun forms.

  • Main areas: Paraguay (Alto Paraguay, Boquerón)

Ayoreo services

SILA Linguists®

Ayoreo interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® helps healthcare providers, community consultations, legal advisers and researchers work with speakers of Ayoreo. Ayoreo is one of the two living languages of the Zamucoan family, the other being Chamacoco (Ishir). Ayoreo communities live in Alto Paraguay and Boquerón in Paraguay and in the department of Santa Cruz in Bolivia. Many groups had little sustained contact with national society until the second half of the twentieth century, and the language remains in strong everyday use in many communities.

Ayoreo interpreting services

Spanish is the main second language for Ayoreo speakers, and some in Paraguay also speak Guarani. We usually work with an interpreter who speaks Ayoreo and Spanish, adding a Spanish and English interpreter where needed, and we confirm that the client is comfortable with this arrangement. Regional differences between Paraguay and Bolivia are small, but we note the country so the interpreter is prepared.

Health and social care conversations benefit from an interpreter who understands Ayoreo community structures and from plain, concrete explanations. Remote video interpreting, via the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform, is the most practical way to reach suitable linguists, and telephone interpreting is available at any time. Consultations about land are interpreted consecutively, with time allowed for discussion, and a female or male interpreter can be requested.

Ayoreo translation and certified translation

Ayoreo is written in the Latin alphabet, with materials produced by schools, missions and linguists in Paraguay and Bolivia. Literacy in Ayoreo varies, so we often combine a short written text with an audio recording or spoken explanation, particularly for health information, consent forms and consultation documents.

Official documents from Paraguay or Bolivia are in Spanish and are translated from Spanish. Our certified translations carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and we can translate English letters and reports into Spanish for Ayoreo community organisations.

Transcription for researchers

Ayoreo grammar, including its distinctive noun forms, is of real interest to researchers, and careful recordings matter for that work. We transcribe Ayoreo interviews and narratives with time stamps and an English translation, marking Spanish or Guarani passages and flagging any uncertain words for review. Where recordings involve several speakers in a community meeting, we identify each voice as clearly as the audio allows.

Sectors we support in Ayoreo

Our vetted, trained and qualified Ayoreo linguists can support healthcare programmes, community consultations and land matters, legal and identity documentation, universities and research projects, and charities working in the Chaco and eastern Bolivia. One SILA Linguists® project team manages each assignment, and every linguist works under a confidentiality agreement and UK GDPR, respecting the privacy of small communities.
