Ava Guarani is one of several Indigenous Guarani languages, distinct from the Paraguayan Guarani spoken by the majority of Paraguayans. It is also known as Chiripá. In Paraguay it is spoken mainly in the departments of Canindeyú, Alto Paraná, Amambay and San Pedro; in Brazil the same people, known as Ñandeva or Nhandeva, live in Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo.

The Ava Guarani are one of the Guarani-family peoples of Paraguay and live in many communities. The language is closely related to Mbyá Guarani, Pai Tavytera and Paraguayan Guarani, and many speakers also use the national Guarani, Spanish or Portuguese.

How we help

Ava Guarani services

SILA Linguists®

Ava Guarani interpreting and translation services from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Ava Guarani interpreters and translators for healthcare teams, education providers, legal advisers and land and community consultations. Ava Guarani, also known as Chiripá, is an Indigenous Guarani language distinct from the Paraguayan Guarani spoken by most Paraguayans. It is spoken in Canindeyú, Alto Paraná, Amambay and San Pedro in Paraguay, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo in Brazil, where the people are known as Ñandeva or Nhandeva, and in Misiones, Argentina.

Ava Guarani interpreters by country and community

Country makes a real difference. A speaker from Paraguay may also be comfortable in Paraguayan Guarani, which offers an additional route, whereas a speaker from Brazil is more likely to use Portuguese as a second language. We confirm the speaker's community and check comprehension before relying on a related language such as Mbyá Guarani or Pai Tavytera.

Religious and community leaders often play an important part in decisions, and some topics are approached with care. Our interpreters are briefed accordingly. Video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your platform is usually the best way to reach a matched linguist, and telephone interpreting can be booked whenever it is needed, day or night. Health visits, school meetings and consultations are interpreted consecutively, with relay through Spanish or Portuguese where that suits the client.

Translation and certified translation

Ava Guarani uses the Latin alphabet with Guarani-style spelling, including nasal vowels and the apostrophe for the glottal stop, and conventions differ slightly between Paraguayan and Brazilian materials. We advise whether written Ava Guarani, Paraguayan Guarani, or a Spanish or Portuguese text with spoken support will reach your readers best.

Identity documents and civil records from Paraguay are issued in Spanish, and those from Brazil in Portuguese. We certify translations from either language with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers, and can manage them in the same project as the interpreting.

Transcription across three languages

Recordings from Ava Guarani communities often mix the Indigenous language with Paraguayan Guarani, Spanish or Portuguese. Our transcribers mark each language, add time stamps and supply an English translation for consultations, research interviews and education projects. Personal names and community names are checked against the spellings used in each country, so that transcripts and later documents match one another.

Where we can help in Ava Guarani

Our vetted, trained and qualified Ava Guarani linguists can support health services, land and community consultation projects, schools and universities, legal and identity advisers, and charities supporting Indigenous communities in Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. One SILA Linguists® project team handles everything, and every linguist is bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.
