Angaité interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Angaité is an Indigenous language of the Paraguayan Chaco, part of the Enlhet-Enenlhet family. SILA Linguists can advise on interpreting and translation for Angaité communities.
Angaité
aqtAngaité belongs to the Enlhet-Enenlhet family, formerly called Lengua-Maskoy, which also includes Enlhet, Enxet, Sanapaná, Guaná and Toba-Maskoy. These peoples are grouped together as one of Paraguay's Indigenous linguistic families. The Angaité live mainly in the departments of Presidente Hayes, Boquerón and Alto Paraguay, in rural communities and on or near cattle ranches where many have worked for generations.
Angaité is closely related to Sanapaná, and the two are sometimes treated as varieties of one language. Many Angaité people now use Paraguayan Guarani or Spanish in daily life, and the number of fluent speakers of Angaité is falling, which makes community language projects important.

SILA Linguists® supports community consultations, healthcare providers, researchers and organisations dealing with labour and land matters in the Paraguayan Chaco with Angaité interpreting, translation and transcription. The Angaité live mainly in Presidente Hayes, Boquerón and Alto Paraguay, often in rural communities on or near cattle ranches where many have worked for generations. Their language belongs to the Enlhet-Enenlhet family and is closely related to Sanapaná. Many Angaité now use Paraguayan Guarani or Spanish daily, so we start by asking which language the person prefers.
Many Angaité adults are more comfortable in Paraguayan Guarani than in Spanish, while some older people prefer Angaité itself. When Angaité is needed we provide an Angaité interpreter; otherwise we work through Guarani or Spanish, adding a second interpreter for English. The aim is always the language in which the person can speak most freely.
Remote interpreting is usually the most practical way to reach suitable linguists, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your own system, or by telephone at any time. For consultations about land, employment or health we recommend extra time, concrete language and regular checks on understanding. Consecutive interpreting suits community meetings, and male or female interpreters can be requested.
Written Angaité materials come mainly from education and documentation projects, and the number of fluent speakers is falling. For most written communication, Paraguayan Guarani or Spanish reaches more readers, and we can advise on the best combination, including audio versions of consultation documents, health notices and employment information.
Paraguayan identity papers, employment records and land documents are issued in Spanish. We provide certified translations from Spanish with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and translate English reports into Spanish or Guarani for community review.
Because the number of fluent speakers is falling, recordings of Angaité speech have lasting value for community language projects and researchers. We produce time-stamped transcripts with English translation, marking passages in Guarani, Spanish or Sanapaná, and flag uncertain words for review by a second linguist rather than guessing. Elders' accounts of ranch work, place names and family history can then be preserved accurately for the community and for future research.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Angaité linguists can support community consultations, labour and land rights advisers, healthcare programmes, universities and language documentation teams, charities and development organisations. A single SILA Linguists® project team coordinates every element, and all linguists are bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR, which matters when consultations touch on employment, land ownership or family circumstances.
