Mopan belongs to the Yucatecan branch of the Mayan family, with Yucatec Maya, Itza' and Lacandón. In Belize it is spoken mainly in the Toledo District, in villages such as San Antonio, and in parts of Stann Creek and Cayo. In Guatemala it is spoken in the south-east of Petén, around San Luis, Poptún and Dolores, and it is one of the country's officially recognised Mayan languages.

Mopan communities in Belize often live near Q'eqchi'-speaking villages, and many people speak both languages as well as English, Belize Kriol or Spanish. Mopan is distinct from Q'eqchi', which belongs to a different branch of the Mayan family.

How we help

Mopan services

SILA Linguists®

Mopan interpreters and translators at SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Mopan interpreting, translation and transcription for healthcare providers, schools, land and community consultations and legal advisers. Mopan is a Yucatecan Mayan language, related to Yucatec Maya, Itza' and Lacandón. In Belize it is spoken mainly in the Toledo District, in villages such as San Antonio, and in parts of Stann Creek and Cayo; in Guatemala, where it is an officially recognised Mayan language, it is spoken around San Luis, Poptún and Dolores in south-eastern Petén.

Mopan interpreting in Belize and Guatemala

The client's country shapes the arrangement. Belizean Mopan speakers usually use English and Belize Kriol as well, so many can work directly with an English-speaking professional through a Mopan interpreter, while Guatemalan speakers usually use Spanish, and relay through Spanish may be needed. Mopan communities in Belize often live near Q'eqchi'-speaking villages, and many people speak both, but Mopan and Q'eqchi' belong to different branches of the Mayan family and are not interchangeable.

Yucatec Maya speakers understand some Mopan, but not reliably enough for legal or medical matters, so we book a Mopan interpreter. Remote work is the most practical choice: video on the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform, or a telephone line available whenever needed. Land and community consultations in Toledo villages are interpreted consecutively, with time for discussion, and a male or female interpreter can be requested.

Mopan translation and certified translation

Mopan is written in the Latin alphabet. Belize and Guatemala have developed slightly different spelling conventions, with Guatemala using its official Mayan alphabet, so we confirm the readership before translating health information, school materials or consultation documents.

Official documents from Belize are issued in English, so they rarely need translation for UK use. Guatemalan records are in Spanish, and we certify their English translations with a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. We can also translate English land or consultation documents into Mopan for community review.

Transcription for consultations and research

Community meetings and research interviews in southern Belize often switch between Mopan, Q'eqchi', Kriol and English. Our transcribers label each language, add time codes and provide an English version, so that the record of a consultation is complete and reliable.

Settings for our linguists in Mopan

Our vetted, trained and qualified Mopan linguists can support health services, schools and education programmes, land and community consultations, legal advisers and researchers in Belize and Guatemala. SILA Linguists® assigns one coordinator to each request, and every linguist signs a confidentiality agreement and follows UK GDPR, an important assurance in small village communities.

Good to know

Working with Mopan

Interpreting

  • Confirm the client's country, as second languages differ: Belizean Mopan speakers usually use English and Kriol, while Guatemalan speakers usually use Spanish. This shapes the relay options where relay is used.
  • Remote interpreting by video or telephone is the most practical choice for Mopan. Yucatec Maya speakers understand some Mopan, but not reliably enough for legal or medical matters.

Translation

  • Mopan is written in the Latin alphabet. Belize and Guatemala have developed slightly different spelling conventions, and Guatemala uses its official Mayan alphabet. We confirm the readership before translation. Official documents from Belize are in English and from Guatemala in Spanish.
