How we help

Mixe (Ayuujk) services

SILA Linguists®

Mixe (Ayuujk) interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® arranges Mixe interpreting, translation and transcription for healthcare providers, legal teams, educators, cultural projects and community governance and consultation. Mixe, which speakers call Ayuujk, Ayuuk or Ayöök, belongs to the Mixe-Zoque family and is spoken in the Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca, in towns such as Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Totontepec, Tamazulápam, Ayutla and San Juan Guichicovi. Highland, midland and lowland Mixe differ considerably.

Ayuujk interpreting by town

Mixe has many variants, and speakers from distant communities may struggle to understand one another. The speaker's town is therefore the key detail, and we check comprehension at the start of each session before moving on to substance.

Many Mixe speakers are bilingual in Spanish, but older people and women in rural communities may be more comfortable in Ayuujk, and a female interpreter can be arranged where that helps. We usually provide video interpreting, through the SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's platform, with Spanish relay into English, and telephone interpreting is available at any hour. Medical appointments and legal interviews proceed consecutively.

The Ayuujk have a strong tradition of community self-government. Consultations with community authorities often involve assemblies and collective decisions, and our interpreters allow time for discussion rather than pushing for immediate answers.

Mixe translation and certified translation

Mixe is written in the Latin alphabet, with spelling systems developed by community writers, teachers and linguists. Different towns use different letters for some vowels, such as ö or ë, so we agree the variety and conventions before translating health information, school materials, cultural texts or consultation documents. The language's complex verb system and distinctive vowels call for translators who are native to the variety concerned.

Official Mexican documents are issued in Spanish. When certification is needed, we translate from Spanish and sign a statement of accuracy, so the papers are accepted by UK authorities including the courts and the Home Office, and by universities and employers.

Transcription for music, culture and research

The Ayuujk are known for their brass bands and music schools, especially in Tlahuitoltepec, and cultural organisations, festivals and documentary makers often record interviews with musicians and teachers. We transcribe such recordings, and community assemblies and research interviews, with time codes and an English or Spanish version, and can subtitle film for international audiences.

Sectors we support in Mixe

Our vetted, trained and qualified Mixe linguists can support hospitals and clinics, courts and legal advisers, schools and universities, music and cultural organisations, and community consultations. SILA Linguists® gives every request one coordinator, and all linguists sign confidentiality agreements and observe UK GDPR.
