Mazatec interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Mazatec is a group of tonal Oto-Manguean languages spoken in the Sierra Mazateca of northern Oaxaca and neighbouring areas of Puebla and Veracruz. SILA Linguists provides Mazatec interpreting and translation matched to the speaker's town.
Mazatec
Mazatec belongs to the Popolocan branch of the Oto-Manguean family, related to Popoloca, Chocholtec and Ixcatec. It is spoken in and around Huautla de Jiménez, San José Tenango, Jalapa de Díaz, Chilchotla and other towns of the Sierra Mazateca and the lowlands towards Veracruz. It is one of the larger Indigenous languages of Mexico and has many distinct variants.
Mazatec is known for whistled speech, in which speakers can hold conversations by whistling the tones of words. Its tone system means that pitch differences carry meaning.

SILA Linguists® supplies Mazatec interpreters and translators to healthcare services, legal teams, immigration advisers and community and research projects. Mazatec belongs to the Popolocan branch of the Oto-Manguean family and is spoken in and around Huautla de Jiménez, San José Tenango, Jalapa de Díaz and Chilchotla in the Sierra Mazateca of northern Oaxaca, and in the lowlands towards Puebla and Veracruz. It is one of Mexico's larger Indigenous languages, yet it is far from uniform.
Mazatec has many distinct variants. Speakers of highland and lowland varieties may not understand each other well, so please give us the municipality. A brief comprehension check at the start of each session confirms that the variant is suitable before any substantive questions are asked.
Many Mazatec speakers are bilingual in Spanish, but older people and some women in rural communities need interpreting in Mazatec, and a female interpreter can be arranged for maternity and women's health appointments. We usually work through video, on the SILA Linguists® app or the platform you already use, with Spanish relay into English, and telephone interpreting is available at any hour. Immigration interviews and court hearings are interpreted consecutively, with time allowed for the relay. If you only know that the client is from the Sierra Mazateca, our coordinators can help narrow down the variant before the session.
Mazatec is tonal, and pitch differences carry meaning. Writing conventions for tone and vowel phonation differ between communities and publishers, so we agree the variant and spelling with you, and where materials must reach very different communities we recommend separate versions rather than one compromise text.
Official documents from Mexico are in Spanish. When certification is required, we translate them into English with a signed accuracy statement, a format accepted by UK authorities from tribunals to the Home Office, and by universities and employers.
Mazatec is known for whistled speech, in which speakers hold conversations by whistling the tones of words. Researchers documenting the language, and legal teams with recorded interviews, can ask us for time-coded transcripts with an English version, produced by transcribers from the relevant area. For asylum cases where origin is in question, language analysis (LADO) can be arranged with specialist analysts.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Mazatec linguists can support hospitals and community health programmes, courts and solicitors, immigration services, universities and community projects. SILA Linguists® gives each assignment one coordinator, and every linguist signs a non-disclosure agreement and follows UK GDPR.
