Uspanteko belongs to the larger K'ichean group of Mayan languages, where it forms its own branch alongside Q'eqchi' and the Poqom languages. It is spoken in and around San Miguel Uspantán and Chicamán, in an area where K'iche' and Q'eqchi' are also used. It is one of Guatemala's officially recognised Mayan languages.

Uspanteko stands out because it is one of the few Mayan languages with contrastive tone, in which pitch distinguishes words. It has a modest number of speakers, many of whom also speak K'iche' or Spanish.

How we help

Uspanteko services

SILA Linguists®

Uspanteko interpreting and translation services from SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Uspanteko interpreters and translators for immigration and asylum services, healthcare providers, community and education projects and language documentation. Uspanteko belongs to the larger K'ichean group of Mayan languages, where it forms its own branch alongside Q'eqchi' and the Poqom languages. It is spoken in and around San Miguel Uspantán and Chicamán in Quiché, Guatemala, an area where K'iche' and Q'eqchi' are also used, and it has a modest number of speakers.

Uspanteko interpreting and the importance of tone

Many Uspanteko speakers are fluent in Spanish, and some speak K'iche', so we ask which languages the client uses before booking. Where Uspanteko is required, for example in an asylum interview or a medical consultation, we provide a community interpreter and work by video, with Spanish relay into English if needed.

Uspanteko is one of the few Mayan languages with contrastive tone, in which pitch distinguishes words. Poor audio can therefore make interpreting harder, and we recommend a good-quality video connection through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform, or a clear telephone line, which can be arranged at any hour. Interviews proceed consecutively, with time for clarification, and the client may ask for a male or female interpreter. A short sound check at the start of each call confirms that tone is coming through clearly before the interview begins.

Translation and certified translation

Uspanteko is written using Guatemala's official Mayan alphabet, but written materials are limited. Every translation is therefore reviewed by a community language specialist, and for key information, such as health instructions or appointment details, we often add a recorded version spoken by an Uspantán speaker.

Official documents from Guatemala are in Spanish. We translate them into English and certify each translation with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and universities, and by employers.

Transcription, documentation and language analysis

Uspanteko's tone system makes good recordings especially valuable for documentation and teaching. We transcribe interviews and narratives with time codes and an English or Spanish version, marking tone-related uncertainties for specialist review, labelling K'iche' or Spanish passages and noting where Q'eqchi' words from neighbouring communities appear. In asylum cases where origin is disputed, language analysis (LADO) can be arranged with specialists who understand how Uspanteko relates to its neighbours.

Sectors we support in Uspanteko

Our vetted, trained and qualified Uspanteko linguists can support immigration and asylum services, hospitals and clinics, schools and community education projects, and language documentation teams. SILA Linguists® appoints a single coordinator for each assignment, and every linguist signs a non-disclosure agreement and handles data under UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Uspanteko

Interpreting

  • We ask which languages the client speaks: many are fluent in Spanish, and some speak K'iche'. Where Uspanteko is required, we provide a community interpreter and work by video, with Spanish relay if needed.
  • Because tone carries meaning, telephone lines with poor audio quality can make interpreting harder; good-quality video or telephone connections help.

Translation

  • Uspanteko is written using Guatemala's official Mayan alphabet. Written materials are limited, so translations should be reviewed by a community language specialist. Official documents are in Spanish.
