SILA Linguists® supports healthcare providers, schools, land and community consultations and advisers dealing with cross-border identity and legal matters in Pai Tavytera. This Tupi-Guarani language, also written Paĩ Tavyterã, is spoken mainly in the Paraguayan departments of Amambay and Concepción, near the Brazilian border, and in San Pedro. Across the border in Mato Grosso do Sul, the closely related Kaiowá people speak a variety known as Kaiwá. Many speakers move between the two countries and recognise a shared identity.
We ask whether the speaker is from Paraguay or Brazil and which second languages they use. A Pai Tavytera speaker may understand Paraguayan Guarani well, but this varies, and a detailed medical or legal discussion should take place in the language the person is most comfortable with. Relay through Spanish, Guarani or Portuguese is common, chosen to suit the individual.
Community leaders and religious specialists may be involved in important decisions, and our interpreters are briefed to respect that process during consultations about land, health or education. Remote video, through the SILA Linguists® app or your chosen platform, helps reach linguists in the border region, and telephone interpreting is available at any time. Sessions are interpreted consecutively, and a male or female interpreter can be requested.
Pai Tavytera is written in the Latin alphabet with Guarani-style spelling, and written materials exist for schools and community programmes. For broad public information we may recommend Paraguayan Guarani or Spanish, with spoken support in Pai Tavytera, while for school and community materials we translate directly into the language.
Cross-border lives often mean papers from two countries: Spanish documents from Paraguay and Portuguese ones from Brazil. We certify English translations from either language with a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers, and keep names spelt consistently between them, which matters when identity records are compared. Where a Paraguayan cédula and a Brazilian document give different spellings, we reproduce each faithfully and add a translator's note.
The Pai Tavytera live in many communities in north-eastern Paraguay, and their language is in daily use. We transcribe community meetings, interviews and narratives with time codes and an English version, labelling passages in Guarani, Spanish or Portuguese.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Pai Tavytera linguists can support health services, schools, land and community consultations, identity and legal advisers, and researchers working in Amambay, Concepción and Mato Grosso do Sul. SILA Linguists® gives each project one coordinator, and every linguist signs a non-disclosure agreement and follows UK GDPR.
