Swedish is the main language of Sweden and one of the two national languages of Finland, where it is spoken mainly along the west and south coasts and is the sole official language of the Åland Islands. It is an official EU language and closely related to Norwegian and Danish. Official language bodies support the language in Sweden, and Finland Swedish in Finland.

Finland Swedish differs from the Swedish of Sweden in pronunciation, some vocabulary and administrative terms. Within Sweden, regional speech in Skåne, Gotland, Norrland and Dalarna varies, and some traditional dialects are hard for other Swedes to follow. Swedish uses pitch accent, which distinguishes some words that are otherwise pronounced alike.

Swedish uses the Latin alphabet with å, ä and ö at the end of the alphabet.

Swedish is a major language of technology, design and manufacturing, and many international firms based in Sweden use Swedish and English side by side. That often means translating internal policies, contracts and product information, as well as interpreting for works councils, investigations and formal meetings.

SILA Linguists®

Swedish interpreters and Swedish translation from SILA Linguists®

Swedish is the main language of Sweden and one of Finland's two national languages, spoken mainly along Finland's west and south coasts and the sole official language of the Åland Islands. It is an official EU language and closely related to Norwegian and Danish, with diaspora communities in Norway, the UK, the United States and Spain. SILA Linguists® supplies Swedish interpreters, translators and transcribers to technology, gaming and telecoms firms, engineering and automotive manufacturers, courts, healthcare, retail and furniture brands, and universities.

Swedish interpreting: informal culture, precise meaning

Swedish society is informal: du is used with almost everyone, including doctors and officials, and titles are rarely used. Our interpreters reflect that naturally while keeping professional precision in English. Many Swedes speak excellent English, yet interpreting remains important in courts, healthcare and formal negotiations, where a misunderstanding has consequences, and older Swedish speakers living abroad may simply prefer their own language when discussing health or family matters. For Finland Swedish speakers, whose vocabulary and pronunciation differ, an interpreter familiar with Finnish administrative terms is a real help.

Swedish interpreters attend court and medical appointments in person, take telephone calls at any hour, and join video sessions via our SILA Linguists® app or the meeting software you prefer. For engineering and automotive projects we provide consecutive interpreting for audits and factory visits, and for technology and gaming companies simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting for launches, investor events and developer conferences.

Swedish translation and localisation

We translate for the target country, Sweden or Finland, which have different legal systems, authorities and some terminology. Personnummer identity numbers appear on most Swedish official documents and are transcribed exactly. Games, apps, software, telecoms documentation, product catalogues and assembly instructions for furniture and consumer goods are core localisation work, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for fast release cycles.

Swedish certificates, court documents, diplomas and corporate records are certified in English with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals and colleges, and by HR departments. Swedish documents for US authorities carry a signed certificate of accuracy. In Sweden, authorised translators are approved by Kammarkollegiet, and Swedish authorities may need such an authorised translation.

Swedish transcription and subtitling

Interviews, recorded meetings, research audio and media in Swedish or Finland Swedish are transcribed with timings and an English rendering, and we produce Swedish subtitles for film, games trailers, e-learning and corporate video.

Sectors we support in Swedish

Our vetted, trained and qualified Swedish linguists can support technology, gaming and telecoms, engineering, automotive and manufacturing, courts and solicitors, healthcare, furniture, retail and consumer goods, and universities and research. SILA Linguists® offers a dedicated coordinator and Swedish specialists for your field. Confidentiality is backed by NDAs and UK GDPR. Swedish interpreting is available for business, legal and medical settings in the United States as well as the UK.

Good to know

Working with Swedish

Interpreting

  • Swedish society is informal: the familiar du is used with almost everyone, including doctors and officials, and titles are rarely used. Interpreters reflect this naturally while keeping professional precision. Many Swedes speak excellent English, but interpreting is important in courts, healthcare and formal negotiations.
  • For Finland Swedish speakers, an interpreter familiar with Finnish administrative terms is helpful. We provide face-to-face, video, telephone and conference interpreting.

Translation

  • Translations should suit the target country, Sweden or Finland, which have different legal systems, authorities and some terminology. Swedish personal identity numbers (personnummer) appear in most official documents and must be transcribed accurately.
  • In Sweden, authorised translators (auktoriserade translatorer) are authorised by the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet). Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Swedish authorities may need an authorised translation. For documents going to authorities in the United States, we arrange the certification those authorities require, including the translator's certificate of accuracy that US immigration authorities expect.
