Finland-Swedish Sign Language developed around the Swedish-language Deaf school in Porvoo (Borgå), which has since closed. It belongs to the Swedish Sign Language family and is related to both Swedish and Finnish Sign Language, but it is recognised as a separate language. The community of Deaf signers is very small and mostly older, and revitalisation work has been led by the Finland-Swedish Deaf community.

The Sign Language Act names both Finnish Sign Language and Finland-Swedish Sign Language, and Section 17 of the Constitution protects the rights of sign language users.

Finland-Swedish Sign Language services

SILA Linguists®

Finland-Swedish Sign Language interpreting from SILA Linguists®

Finland-Swedish Sign Language grew up around the Swedish-language Deaf school in Porvoo (Borgå), which has since closed. It belongs to the Swedish Sign Language family and is related to both Swedish and Finnish Sign Language, yet it is recognised as a separate language. Its community of Deaf signers is very small and mostly older, and revitalisation work is led by the Finland-Swedish Deaf community. SILA Linguists® provides interpreting, video translation and transcripts in this endangered language for healthcare and elderly care providers, public services and families.

Specialist interpreting for a small community

We provide Finland-Swedish Sign Language interpreting through specialist interpreters. Many Finland-Swedish Deaf people also use Finnish Sign Language or Swedish Sign Language, and their preference should guide the booking: some are happy with either, while others, especially older signers, communicate far more comfortably in their own language.

For older Deaf clients, allow time and consider on-site interpreting rather than video, which some find tiring. Typical assignments include appointments in healthcare and elderly care, meetings with public services and family matters such as care planning, where accuracy and patience matter more than speed. Because interpreters are few, we recommend booking as early as possible and, for regular appointments, keeping the same interpreter so the Deaf person feels at ease.

Recording information in Finland-Swedish Sign Language

We translate written Swedish, Finnish or English, such as care plans, health information and public service letters, into recorded Finland-Swedish Sign Language video with Deaf translators, and translate signed video into written text. Swedish and Finnish documents are translated and certified by our Nordic language teams.

Recorded material also supports the language's revitalisation. Signed versions of community information, stories and interviews help preserve vocabulary that might otherwise be lost, and we work carefully with Deaf signers to respect their choices about how the language is presented.

Captions and written transcripts

We supply captions and written transcripts of recorded signing in Swedish, Finnish or English, useful both for service records and for documentation projects.

In documentation work, we can add time-coded glosses to recordings so that researchers and community members can search for particular signs later. Transcripts used in care settings are kept short and practical, recording decisions and agreed next steps clearly for the Deaf person, their family and staff.

Working with Finland-Swedish Sign Language

Interpreting

  • We provide Finland-Swedish Sign Language interpreting through specialist interpreters. Many Finland-Swedish Deaf people also use Finnish Sign Language or Swedish Sign Language, and their preference should guide the booking.
  • For older Deaf clients, allow time and consider on-site interpreting rather than video, which some find tiring. Our vetted, trained and qualified interpreters are briefed before each assignment and agree the communication approach with the Deaf person.

Translation

  • Written material for this community is usually in Swedish or Finnish. Filmed signed translations can be explored with the community but need specialist checking.
  • When preparing written information for Finland-Swedish Deaf readers, plain Swedish with clear structure is often more useful than a literal translation from Finnish, and the community's own organisations can advise on accessible formats.
