Danish is the official language of Denmark and is used in administration in the Faroe Islands and Greenland alongside Faroese and Greenlandic. There is a long-established Danish-speaking minority in Southern Schleswig in northern Germany. Written Danish is very close to Norwegian Bokmål, and Danes, Norwegians and Swedes can often read each other's languages, although spoken Danish is harder for other Scandinavians to follow.

Spoken Danish is known for reducing and softening consonants and for the stød, a creaky glottal feature that can distinguish words. Traditional dialects include Jutlandic, Insular Danish and Bornholmish, though regional differences have decreased. An official language body publishes the standard spelling dictionary.

Danish uses the Latin alphabet with three additional letters at the end: æ, ø and å.

How we help

Danish services

SILA Linguists®

Danish interpreters and Danish translation services from SILA Linguists®

Danish is the official language of Denmark, used in administration in the Faroe Islands and Greenland and by a long-established minority in Southern Schleswig in Germany. Written Danish is very close to Norwegian Bokmål, but spoken Danish, with its softened consonants and the creaky stød, is harder for other Scandinavians to follow. SILA Linguists® provides Danish interpreters, translators and transcribers to shipping, offshore and renewable energy companies, life sciences firms, courts and solicitors, healthcare providers and universities across Britain, North America, Australia, New Zealand and further afield.

Danish interpreting where precision matters

Most Danes speak English well, so interpreting is usually needed where precision matters: legal proceedings, healthcare for older or vulnerable people, technical negotiations and formal board or regulatory meetings. Speakers from Jutland or Bornholm can sound quite different from Copenhagen speech, and our interpreters are used to the range.

We provide Danish interpreters for conferences and remote meetings in the energy, shipping and life sciences sectors, with simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting for multilingual events. Telephone interpreting is available at any hour for shorter assignments, video interpreting runs through the SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's video system, and face-to-face interpreters attend court hearings, hospital appointments and site visits to offshore wind and port facilities.

Danish translation, CPR numbers and certification

Translations follow current Danish spelling with æ, ø and å, and names written with aa, the older form of å, are kept as in identity documents. Danish personal identification (CPR) numbers and dates appear on most official papers and must be transcribed exactly. Certified translations of civil records, court documents and academic transcripts carry a signed and dated statement of accuracy, accepted by recruiters, tribunals, universities and other UK authorities; Danish authorities may require a state-authorised translator, so check their rules.

For pharmaceuticals and life sciences, we translate clinical, regulatory and product documentation, and for energy and shipping, technical manuals, contracts and HSE material. We localise websites, software and marketing for Danish markets, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for large volumes.

Danish transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Danish interviews, research recordings and corporate video with timestamps and a parallel English text, and subtitle film, television and training content.

Sectors we support in Danish

Our vetted, trained and qualified Danish linguists can support shipping lines and offshore wind developers, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, law firms and courts, hospitals and care providers, event organisers and universities working with Danish partners. SILA Linguists® gives every assignment a single coordinator and Danish linguists vetted for their specialist field. Confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR matter as much for unpublished trial data as for a family court file.

Good to know

Working with Danish

Interpreting

  • Most Danes speak English well, so interpreting is usually needed for legal proceedings, healthcare involving older or vulnerable people, technical negotiations and formal meetings where precision matters. Speakers from Jutland or Bornholm can sound quite different from Copenhagen speech, and our interpreters are used to this.
  • We provide Danish interpreters for conferences and remote meetings, including in the energy, shipping and life sciences sectors, as well as telephone and video interpreting for shorter assignments.
  • Danish communication style is often direct and informal, with the familiar du used in most situations, including with doctors and officials. Interpreters keep this tone while making sure nothing is lost in technical or legal detail.

Translation

  • Translations should follow current Danish spelling and use æ, ø and å correctly; names written with aa (an older form of å) should be kept as in identity documents. Danish personal identification (CPR) numbers and dates appear in most official documents and must be transcribed accurately.
  • Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies. Danish authorities may ask for translations by a state-authorised translator (statsautoriseret translatør), so check requirements for documents going to Denmark.
