Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Svenskt teckenspråk, Swedish Sign Language, is the language of the Deaf community in Sweden. Sweden was the first country to recognise a national sign language.
Svenskt teckenspråk
swlSwedish Sign Language is the root of a small family that includes Finnish Sign Language, Finland-Swedish Sign Language and Portuguese Sign Language, all shaped by Swedish involvement in early Deaf education. It is distinct from Danish and Norwegian sign languages.
The Swedish Parliament has recognised Swedish Sign Language as the first language of Deaf people, and the Language Act (Språklag) gives the public sector a special responsibility to protect and promote it. The Act also states that people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and others who need sign language, should be able to learn, develop and use it. A national Deaf association represents the community.
Swedish Deaf children have had access to bilingual education in Swedish Sign Language and written Swedish for decades, which has made the Swedish Deaf community one of the most influential in the world in sign language policy.

Svenskt teckenspråk, Swedish Sign Language, is the root of a small family that includes Finnish Sign Language, Finland-Swedish Sign Language and Portuguese Sign Language, all shaped by Swedish involvement in early Deaf education. It is distinct from Danish and Norwegian sign languages. Sweden was among the first countries to recognise its sign language as the first language of Deaf people, and Swedish law gives the public sector a special responsibility to protect and promote it. SILA Linguists® arranges Swedish Sign Language interpreting, signed video and captions for healthcare, public authorities, education, employers and conferences.
Sweden's regional health services organise much public interpreting, and interpreters are trained at folk high schools and universities. When Swedish Deaf people study, work, travel or receive treatment abroad, or when organisations outside Sweden need to communicate with them, we arrange Swedish Sign Language interpreters on site or through video remote interpreting.
Typical assignments include hospital and specialist appointments, meetings with public authorities, university courses, workplace meetings and conferences. Finland-Swedish Deaf people may prefer their own sign language or Finnish Sign Language, so we ask. International Sign is used at Nordic and international Deaf events, and we can provide it alongside Swedish Sign Language. Long days are shared between two interpreters.
Swedish Deaf professionals on secondment or exchange abroad often need regular interpreting for months at a time, and we can plan a schedule with a small, consistent team.
Deaf translators record Swedish Sign Language versions of patient information, public authority guidance, course material and accessible web pages written in Swedish or English, and signed Swedish footage can be written up in either language. Swedish certificates are certified by our Swedish translators.
Because Swedish law says that people who need sign language should be able to learn, develop and use it, Swedish public bodies increasingly publish signed versions of key information, and we can produce these to a consistent house style.
Swedish or English captions and written transcripts are available for videos, webinars and conference recordings, each file proofread by a person.
Live Nordic events can combine Swedish Sign Language, International Sign and real-time Swedish captions, so every participant follows in the format that suits them.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Swedish Sign Language interpreters can support healthcare providers, public authorities, schools and universities, employers and conference organisers. One SILA Linguists® coordinator handles each request, interpreters are vetted, and Swedish Deaf clients' details stay confidential under non-disclosure agreements and UK GDPR.
