Finnish is the majority language of Finland, where Swedish is also a national language, and an official EU language. It is a recognised minority language in Sweden, where there is a large Finnish-speaking population, and related varieties are spoken in northern Norway and Russian Karelia. Finnish is closely related to Estonian and distantly to Hungarian, and is not related to Swedish or Russian.

Finnish builds words by adding endings, has fifteen grammatical cases and uses vowel harmony. It has no grammatical gender, and the pronoun hän means both he and she. Written standard Finnish (kirjakieli) differs noticeably from everyday spoken Finnish (puhekieli), and regional speech in areas such as Savo, Ostrobothnia or Turku is distinctive. An official language body advises on standard usage.

Finnish uses the Latin alphabet with ä and ö, and å in Swedish names.

How we help

Finnish services

SILA Linguists®

Finnish interpreters and Finnish translation services from SILA Linguists®

Finnish, suomi, is the majority language of Finland, an official EU language and a recognised minority language in Sweden, with related varieties in northern Norway and Russian Karelia and diaspora communities in Sweden, the United States, Canada and Australia. It is close to Estonian, distant from Hungarian and unrelated to Swedish or Russian. SILA Linguists® provides Finnish interpreters, translators and transcribers to technology, telecoms and gaming companies, courts and police, healthcare and social services, forestry and engineering firms, universities and exporters worldwide.

Finnish interpreting for courts, clinics and boardrooms

Many Finns speak excellent English, yet interpreting is still used in courts, police interviews, healthcare and formal negotiations, and for older people. Finnish has a single pronoun, hän, for he and she, so our interpreters clarify gender where it matters, and they move comfortably between spoken Finnish, which differs noticeably from the written standard, and formal registers. For Finland's Swedish-speaking community we ask whether the client prefers Swedish or Finnish.

We provide Finnish interpreters face to face, by telephone at any hour of the day or night, and by video through the SILA Linguists® video app or the platform your service has approved. For technology and engineering projects we provide consecutive interpreting for factory acceptance tests, audits and site visits in the forestry and manufacturing sectors. We also provide simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting for conferences, product launches and research symposia.

Finnish translation, localisation and certification

Finnish builds long words through compounding and endings, with fifteen cases and vowel harmony, so user interfaces and layouts need checking after translation. We localise software, games, apps, websites and telecoms documentation for Finnish users, and many products need both Finnish and Swedish versions, which we can deliver together. AI-assisted translation with human post-editing suits large technical and software volumes.

Certified translations of civil records, court documents, diplomas and corporate papers carry a signed statement of accuracy and completeness, accepted by the Home Office, employers, universities and other UK authorities. Finnish documents for authorities in the United States, Canada or Australia are certified as each requires, NAATI included where Australia asks. In Finland, authorised translators certify official translations under a national scheme, so check what a Finnish authority needs.

Finnish transcription and subtitling

Finland has a strong subtitling tradition, and we create Finnish subtitles for film, television, games and corporate video, as well as time-coded transcripts with English translation for interviews, research and legal recordings.

Sectors we support in Finnish

Our vetted, trained and qualified Finnish linguists can support technology, telecoms and gaming studios, courts and police, healthcare and social services, forestry, engineering and manufacturing, universities and research institutes, and exporters trading with Finland. SILA Linguists® provides a dedicated coordinator and Finnish linguists vetted for their field, with confidentiality under signed agreements and UK GDPR. Finnish interpreting is available for courts, hospitals and business meetings in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Good to know

Working with Finnish

Interpreting

  • Many Finns speak excellent English, but interpreting is used in courts, healthcare, police and formal negotiations, and for older people. Interpreters clarify gender where hän leaves it open and adjust between spoken and written styles.
  • For the Swedish-speaking Finnish community, ask whether the client prefers Swedish or Finnish. We can provide Finnish interpreters face to face, by video and by telephone, and for conferences.

Translation

  • Finnish words can be long because of compounding and endings, so user interfaces and layouts need checking after translation. Finnish product and public information is often expected in both Finnish and Swedish.
  • In Finland, authorised translators (auktorisoidut kääntäjät) certify official translations under a system run by the Finnish National Agency for Education. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Finnish authorities may need an authorised translation made in Finland. If your documents are for use in the United States, Canada or Australia, we arrange the certification required there, from a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities to NAATI-certified translation for Australia.
  • Finnish uses different conventions from English for dates, decimal commas and thousands separators, and Finnish legal and administrative terms often have no direct English equivalent. Translators explain terms where needed rather than leaving readers to guess.
