Norwegian is the main official language of Norway, which also recognises Sámi languages and minority languages such as Kven. Written Norwegian has two official standards. Bokmål, developed from Danish-influenced written Norwegian, is used by most people. Nynorsk, based on rural dialects, is used by a significant minority, especially in western Norway. An official language council manages both standards.

There is no official standard spoken Norwegian. Dialects are widely used in all settings, including television, parliament and courts, and can differ considerably from each other. Norwegian is closely related to Danish and Swedish, and Scandinavians can often understand each other with some effort.

Norwegian uses the Latin alphabet with æ, ø and å.

Norwegian services

SILA Linguists®

Norwegian interpreters and Norwegian translation from SILA Linguists®

Norwegian is the main official language of Norway, which also recognises Sámi languages and Kven. Written Norwegian has two official standards, Bokmål, used by most people, and Nynorsk, based on rural dialects and strong in western Norway, while spoken Norwegian has no official standard and dialects are used everywhere. SILA Linguists® provides Norwegian interpreters, translators and transcribers to oil, gas and offshore wind companies, shipping and maritime lawyers, courts, healthcare, seafood and aquaculture firms, and technical documentation teams worldwide.

Norwegian interpreting, from Bergen to Trøndelag

Because Norwegians speak their own dialect in every setting, our interpreters must be comfortable with regional speech from Bergen to Trøndelag to northern Norway; mention the client's region if you know it. Norwegian uses the familiar du with almost everyone, and our interpreters convey that informality without making a court hearing or a medical consultation sound careless in English. Offshore crews often mix English technical terms into Norwegian, and our interpreters keep those terms exactly as used.

Our Norwegian interpreters are prepared for incident investigations, safety audits, contract negotiations and arbitration in energy, offshore and shipping, and for buyer meetings and inspections in seafood and aquaculture. We also cover courts, solicitors and healthcare face to face, by telephone at any hour, and by video through our SILA Linguists® app or the video service your team already uses. Conferences and business meetings can have consecutive, simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting.

Bokmål or Nynorsk translation, and certification

We agree the written standard before translation begins: Bokmål for most audiences, Nynorsk where the client or region uses it. Norwegian public bodies must use both standards, and some publish in both, which we can deliver together. Corporate and technical documentation, offshore procedures, HSE manuals, maritime contracts and seafood certification are core work, and we localise websites and software for Norwegian users, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for large technical volumes.

Certified translations of civil records, court documents, diplomas and company papers carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by courts, the Home Office and other UK authorities. Norwegian records for US authorities carry a signed certificate of accuracy. Norway has state-authorised translators who have passed a national examination, so check what a Norwegian authority requires.

Norwegian transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Norwegian interviews, incident recordings and meetings with time codes and an English version alongside, handling strong dialects accurately, and subtitle training films, broadcast content and corporate video. Sámi or Kven passages in Norwegian recordings are flagged for a specialist rather than guessed.

Sectors we support in Norwegian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Norwegian linguists can support oil, gas and offshore wind, shipping and maritime law, courts and solicitors, healthcare, seafood and aquaculture, and engineering and corporate documentation teams. SILA Linguists® provides one coordinator and Norwegian linguists with sector knowledge, and every file is covered by NDAs and UK GDPR. Norwegian interpreting is available for business, legal and medical appointments in the United States as well as in the UK.

Good to know

Working with Norwegian

Interpreting

  • Because people speak their own dialect everywhere, interpreters must be comfortable with regional speech, from Bergen to Trøndelag to northern Norway. Mention the client's region if you know it. Norwegian interpreting is often needed in energy, offshore, shipping and legal matters, as well as healthcare.
  • We provide Norwegian interpreting for conferences and business meetings, and face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting.
  • Norwegian uses the familiar du with almost everyone, and titles are rarely used, so the tone of professional conversations can feel informal to outsiders. Interpreters keep this natural style while making sure precise information, such as medical instructions or legal rights, is fully understood.

Translation

  • Choose the written standard before translation begins: Bokmål for most audiences, Nynorsk where the client or region uses it. Norwegian public bodies are required to use both standards, and some publish in both.
  • Norway has state-authorised translators (statsautoriserte translatører) who have passed a national examination. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Norwegian authorities may need a state-authorised translation. For documents going to authorities in the United States, we arrange the certification those authorities require, including the translator's certificate of accuracy that US immigration authorities expect.
