Telugu is a Dravidian language of the South-Central branch, related to Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam. It has a long literary tradition and has been designated a classical language by the Government of India. It is the first language of a very large population, mainly in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Telugu has three broad regional varieties: coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana, with Telangana speech showing more Urdu influence. The standard written language is based on coastal Andhra speech. Many Telugu speakers have migrated for work and study, especially to the US, the UK and the Gulf, many in information technology and healthcare.

Most native Telugu words end in vowels, which gives the language a distinctive sound. Its vocabulary draws heavily on Sanskrit, with Farsi and Urdu borrowings especially in Telangana, and many English loanwords in modern use.

How we help

Telugu services

SILA Linguists®

Telugu interpreters and Telugu translation services with SILA Linguists®

Engineers, doctors and students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have built large Telugu-speaking communities in the US, the UK, the Gulf, Australia and Malaysia, and their parents often join them for long visits. SILA Linguists® provides Telugu interpreters, translators and transcribers for clients in the UK, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Telangana speech, shaped by Urdu, differs noticeably from the coastal Andhra standard and from Rayalaseema, so we ask about the speaker's region whenever it affects understanding.

Telugu interpreting for families, patients and professionals

A Telugu interpreter is often needed for visiting parents who need a GP appointment or hospital treatment. We cover face-to-face sessions where local linguists are available, telephone interpreting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting via the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform. Legal consultations, inheritance disputes and immigration appointments are handled in the same way.

Our interpreters use respectful forms such as meeru with adults and elders, adjust formality to the setting, and recognise the Urdu-influenced vocabulary heard in Hyderabad. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting can be arranged for business meetings and technology events, and a female or male interpreter is available on request.

Certified Telugu translation and localisation

Telugu is written in its own rounded script, closely related to Kannada, with vowel signs and conjuncts that must render correctly. We translate birth certificates, degree certificates and mark sheets, property and inheritance papers, powers of attorney and court documents from both states. Telugu names often begin with a family or village name, and we follow the order shown on official identity documents.

Certified translations carry a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, universities and employers. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana records bound for Australia can be NAATI-certified, and those for US immigration come with a certificate of accuracy. For technology companies and service providers, we also localise apps, websites and user guides into Telugu, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing where large volumes are involved.

Telugu transcription

Recorded calls, interviews, family videos submitted as evidence and research recordings are transcribed in Telugu with time stamps and translated into English. Telugu speakers often mix in English technical terms, and our transcribers note this clearly. Each transcript is checked against the audio by a second Telugu linguist before delivery, so names, figures and dates are accurate.

Settings for our linguists in Telugu

Our vetted, trained and qualified Telugu linguists can support hospitals and GP practices, immigration and visa advisers, solicitors handling property and family matters, universities, and businesses in information technology and healthcare. You get one point of contact, vetted linguists and strict confidentiality under signed agreements and UK GDPR. The same team can also support mental health services and social care teams working with older Telugu speakers. Telugu interpreting is offered for hospitals, universities and immigration interviews in the United States and Australia, by video or in person.

Good to know

Working with Telugu

Interpreting

  • Many Telugu-speaking professionals in the diaspora are fluent in English. Interpreting is often needed for parents and relatives on visits, for family and legal matters, and in healthcare.
  • If the client is from Telangana or Hyderabad, an interpreter familiar with Telangana speech and its Urdu-influenced vocabulary is helpful.
  • Telugu interpreters are available by video and telephone, and face to face where local linguists are available.
  • Use of respectful forms (meeru rather than nuvvu) matters with adults and elders. Interpreters adapt formality to the setting.

Translation

  • Telugu is written left to right in its own rounded script, closely related to Kannada. Unicode Telugu fonts are needed and proofs should be checked for correct rendering of vowel signs and conjuncts.
  • We translate certificates, school and university records, property documents and court papers from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for certified use, keeping names consistent with passports. Telugu names often place a family or village name first, which we follow as shown in official identity documents.
