Malayalam interpreters on site for appointments, hearings and meetings.
Malayalam is the language of Kerala in south-west India and of large communities in the Gulf, the UK, Ireland and beyond. We provide Malayalam interpreters and translators.
മലയാളം
malMalayalam is a Dravidian language, most closely related to Tamil, from which it separated over a thousand years ago. It is the official language of Kerala and Lakshadweep, one of India's scheduled languages, and has been designated a classical language by the Government of India. Its vocabulary includes many words from Sanskrit, alongside words from Arabic, Portuguese and English reflecting Kerala's long trading history.
Malayalam varies by region and community. Speech in Thiruvananthapuram, central Kerala and Malabar in the north differs, and Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities can use distinctive vocabulary. Migration from Kerala has created large Malayali communities in the Gulf states and, increasingly, in the UK, Ireland and Australia, many connected to nursing and healthcare.
Malayalam is known for its relatively large number of consonant sounds and its long, agglutinative words, where several meanings are joined in one word. Malayalam numerals and older script forms appear in some historical records.

Kerala's long tradition of migration has built large Malayali communities in the Gulf and, increasingly, in Britain, Ireland and Australia, many of them connected to nursing and healthcare. SILA Linguists® provides Malayalam interpreting, translation and transcription for hospitals, immigration advisers, solicitors, universities and community services worldwide. Speech differs between Thiruvananthapuram, central Kerala and Malabar in the north, and Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities can use distinctive vocabulary, so a short note about the client's background helps us match the right linguist.
Malayali nurses and doctors usually work in English, and interpreting is most often needed for the people around them: parents visiting on a family visa who need hospital care, newly arrived spouses, relatives involved in family court or probate matters, and anyone who prefers their first language when the conversation is difficult. Our Malayalam interpreters handle GP and hospital appointments, solicitors' meetings, immigration interviews, school meetings and community services.
Malayalam interpreting is available in person, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform, and by telephone 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Kerala has high literacy, so many clients read Malayalam well; we can add translated letters or written summaries to support an interpreted appointment. Consecutive and remote simultaneous interpreting is available for church, cultural and community events, and a female or male interpreter can be requested.
Malayalam has its own script with a large set of conjunct characters. A spelling reform simplified many of them, but older documents and some fonts still use traditional forms, so our translators work in Unicode and match the style of the source where needed. Long agglutinative words, where several meanings join in one, call for translators who unpack them accurately in English.
We translate Kerala birth and marriage certificates, church baptism and marriage records, school and university documents, nursing qualifications, employment references and property papers. Certified Malayalam translation keeps names consistent with passports and comes with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, universities and courts, and by professional regulators and employers. Kerala documents for regulators or immigration offices in the United States, Canada or Australia are certified in the required form, for instance through NAATI-certified translators in Australia. Into Malayalam, we produce patient information, community guidance and family correspondence.
We transcribe Malayalam audio and video, from recorded interviews to family evidence and research recordings, with time stamps and English translation. Malayalam speakers often mix in English words, and the transcript records this as spoken.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Malayalam linguists can support NHS trusts and private hospitals, care providers recruiting from Kerala, immigration and family lawyers, universities and qualification assessors, churches and community associations. One project team coordinates everything, linguists are vetted and bound by confidentiality agreements, and personal data is processed in line with UK GDPR. Malayalam interpreters can assist nurses, doctors and their families in Canada, the United States and Australia with registration interviews, hospital matters and immigration.
