Estonian is closely related to Finnish and more distantly to Hungarian, and is not related to its Baltic neighbours Latvian and Lithuanian. It is the official language of Estonia and an official EU language. Dictionaries and spelling norms are maintained by an official language body.

Estonian is known for three degrees of sound length, which can change the meaning of words that look almost the same in writing. It has fourteen grammatical cases, no grammatical gender and no separate future tense. North Estonian forms the basis of the standard; in the south-east, Võro and Seto have their own written traditions, and some regard them as separate languages.

Estonia has a large Russian-speaking population, especially in Tallinn and Ida-Viru county, so Estonian residents may prefer Russian or Estonian depending on background.

How we help

Estonian services

SILA Linguists®

Estonian interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

Estonian, eesti keel, is the official language of Estonia and an official EU language, a Finnic language close to Finnish and only distantly related to Hungarian, with no link to its Baltic neighbours Latvian and Lithuanian. Diaspora communities live in Finland, Sweden, the UK, Canada and the United States. SILA Linguists® provides Estonian interpreters, translators and transcribers to courts and legal services, technology start-ups and digital service providers, healthcare, universities, researchers and employers in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Estonian interpreting, and Russian where preferred

Some Estonian citizens and residents are more comfortable in Russian, so we ask the client which language they prefer and can provide either. Estonian has a single pronoun for he and she, tema or ta, so our interpreters clarify gender whenever the context requires it, a detail that can matter in a witness statement or a medical history. Its three degrees of sound length can also change the meaning of words that look almost the same, which is why we use native-speaker interpreters.

Estonian is less widely spoken than some EU languages, so video and telephone interpreting are especially useful when no face-to-face interpreter is nearby. Our phone line is open through the night as well as the day, and video runs through the SILA Linguists® app or a secure platform of your choice. In-person interpreters can be arranged for court hearings and hospital appointments. For technology and education teams we provide consecutive or remote simultaneous interpreting for product launches, investor meetings and academic conferences.

Estonian translation for a digital state

Estonian uses õ, ä, ö and ü, plus š and ž in loanwords, and fonts and databases must handle them correctly, especially in names. Estonia's digital government means many documents are issued electronically with digital signatures; we translate the content and describe the signature details so that a UK reader understands what has been verified. Certified translations of civil records, court papers, diplomas and company documents carry a signed statement of accuracy and completeness, accepted by the Home Office, universities, tribunals and other UK authorities. Estonian records for offices in the United States or Canada are certified in the form they expect. In Estonia, sworn translators, vandetõlgid, provide official translations, so check what an Estonian authority requires.

For start-ups and digital service companies, we localise software, apps, websites and help centres into Estonian, combining specialist translators with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for fast release cycles.

Estonian transcription and subtitling

Interviews, research recordings, webinars and product videos in Estonian are transcribed with timings marked and translated into English, and we produce Estonian or English subtitles for marketing and training content.

Where our Estonian linguists work

Our vetted, trained and qualified Estonian linguists can support courts and law firms, technology companies and digital services, hospitals and clinics, universities and research groups, and employers recruiting from Estonia. Every project gets a single SILA Linguists® coordinator, and signed confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR apply from source code strings to sensitive legal files. Estonian interpreters can support legal, business and medical appointments in Canada and the United States.

Good to know

Working with Estonian

Interpreting

  • Ask the client which language they prefer. Some Estonian citizens and residents are more comfortable in Russian, and we can provide either. Because Estonian has a single pronoun for he and she (tema, often shortened to ta), interpreters clarify gender when the context requires it.
  • Estonian is less widely spoken than some EU languages, so video and telephone interpreting are useful when a face-to-face interpreter is not nearby.

Translation

  • Estonian uses the Latin alphabet with õ, ä, ö and ü, and š and ž in loanwords. Fonts and databases must handle these letters correctly, especially in names. Estonia's digital government means many documents are issued electronically with digital signatures; we translate the content and describe the signature details.
  • In Estonia, sworn translators (vandetõlgid) provide official translations. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Estonian authorities may need a sworn translation made under Estonian rules. Where a document is needed in the United States or Canada, we arrange the certification the receiving authority expects, whether that is a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities or a translator certified by a Canadian provincial association.
