Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and Suriname, one of the official languages of Belgium, where it is the language of Flanders and is used in Brussels. It is also official in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The Nederlandse Taalunie, a treaty organisation of the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname, maintains the common standard and spelling.

Dutch as used in Belgium is often called Flemish (Vlaams). Written standard Dutch is the same in both countries, but vocabulary, legal and administrative terms, forms of address and pronunciation differ, and regional speech in Flanders, Limburg or Brabant can be very distinctive. Afrikaans developed from Dutch in South Africa and is now a separate language.

Dutch uses the Latin alphabet. The combination ij is treated as a single unit in some contexts, which is why both letters are capitalised at the start of words like IJsselmeer.

  • Main areas: Netherlands, Belgium (Antwerp, East Flanders, West Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Limburg)
  • Also used: Suriname, Belgium (Brussels Capital)

SILA Linguists®

Dutch and Flemish interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

Dutch is the official language of the Netherlands and Suriname, the language of Flanders and one of the languages of Brussels, and official in Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. There is one shared written standard, yet Belgian Dutch, often called Flemish, differs in vocabulary, legal terms and forms of address. SILA Linguists® provides Dutch interpreters, translators and transcribers to courts, police, corporate and financial firms, engineering, logistics and port operators, healthcare, marketing teams and international organisations across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

Dutch interpreting for the Netherlands and Belgium

Many Dutch and Flemish speakers have excellent English, yet interpreting remains essential in court, police interviews, healthcare and formal negotiations, where people have a right to understand and be understood precisely. Tell us whether the client is from the Netherlands or Belgium and we match vocabulary and accent; speakers from Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean may also use Sranan Tongo or Papiamento, and we take that into account.

We provide Dutch interpreters for court hearings, police stations and solicitors' meetings, hospital appointments and corporate negotiations, by telephone at any hour, on video through our SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's video system, and in person. For conferences, shareholder meetings, EU and international events we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Dutch translation, certification and localisation

Legal and administrative terminology differs between the Netherlands and Belgium, as do postcode formats and terms of address, so we translate for the country where the text will be used. Certified translations of civil records, court documents, company papers and diplomas carry a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the courts, the Home Office, universities and other UK authorities across the country. The Netherlands and Belgium each have their own rules for sworn translation, so check what a Dutch or Belgian authority requires.

Our translators handle contracts, annual reports, compliance documents and due diligence files for corporate, financial and legal teams, and technical documentation for engineering, logistics and port operators. For marketing, we localise websites, apps, e-commerce and campaigns for Dutch and Flemish audiences, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing available.

Dutch transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Dutch and Flemish interviews, recorded evidence, earnings calls and media with time codes and an English version alongside, and subtitle film, television and corporate video for either market.

Sectors we support in Dutch

Our vetted, trained and qualified Dutch and Flemish linguists can support courts, police and law firms, banks, insurers and asset managers, engineering and port operators, hospitals, creative agencies and international bodies. Every assignment has one SILA Linguists® coordinator and linguists chosen for their subject knowledge and country variant, with strict confidentiality under signed agreements and UK GDPR.

Working with Dutch

Interpreting

  • Many Dutch and Flemish speakers have excellent English, yet interpreting is still essential in court, police, healthcare and formal negotiations, where people have a right to understand and be understood precisely. Tell us whether the client is from the Netherlands or Belgium so we can match vocabulary and accent.
  • We provide Dutch interpreters for conferences, remote simultaneous interpreting, business meetings and legal hearings, as well as telephone and video interpreting for shorter assignments.
  • In Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean, Dutch is used alongside Sranan Tongo, Papiamento and other languages. A client from these places may prefer another language for personal conversations, so it is worth asking.

Translation

  • Legal and administrative terminology differs between the Netherlands and Belgium, as do conventions such as postcode formats and terms of address. We translate for the country where the text will be used.
  • In the Netherlands, sworn translators (beëdigd vertalers) are listed on a national register, and Belgium has its own system for sworn translators. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Dutch or Belgian authorities may require a translation by a translator sworn there.
