Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Nederlandse Gebarentaal (NGT) is the sign language of the Deaf community in the Netherlands and is recognised by law.
Nederlandse Gebarentaal (NGT)
dseNGT is a natural language with its own grammar. Historically it was influenced by French Sign Language through early Deaf education, and it has regional variants linked to the five former Deaf school regions (Groningen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Sint-Michielsgestel and Voorburg). It is different from Flemish Sign Language (VGT) in Belgium, despite the shared written language.
The Netherlands recognises NGT by law (Wet erkenning Nederlandse Gebarentaal), which also set up a Dutch Sign Language Council. Dovenschap represents the Deaf community.

Nederlandse Gebarentaal, NGT, is a natural language with its own grammar, shaped historically by French Sign Language through early Deaf education. The Netherlands recognises it by law. NGT differs from Flemish Sign Language in Belgium despite the shared written language. SILA Linguists® provides NGT interpreting, video translation and captioning for hospitals, courts, international tribunals, employers, schools and conferences in the Netherlands and wherever Dutch Deaf people live and work.
NGT has regional variants linked to the five former Deaf school regions: Groningen, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Sint-Michielsgestel and Voorburg. Ask the Deaf person about their region, as some signs differ, and tell us when you book. For Flemish Deaf clients, a VGT interpreter is the right choice instead.
We provide NGT interpreting face to face and by video remote interpreting for hospital and GP appointments, court hearings and proceedings at international courts and tribunals, job interviews and workplace meetings, schools and universities, and conferences. Deaf interpreters (dove tolken) are increasingly used in the Netherlands for legal and complex settings, and we can include one in the team. International Sign may be needed at international meetings in The Hague and elsewhere, and long sessions are covered by co-working interpreters.
We translate written Dutch or English, such as patient leaflets, court information, employment policies, school letters and web content, into recorded NGT video produced with Deaf translators, and translate signed NGT video into written Dutch or English. Dutch certificates and records are translated and certified by our Dutch team.
Since its legal recognition, Dutch public bodies have paid more attention to information in NGT. We help organisations decide which texts benefit most from a signed version, write a plain-language script, and deliver captioned videos ready for websites and social channels.
Webinars, training films and recorded meetings can be captioned in Dutch or English, and we produce written transcripts of signed and spoken content. Every caption file is reviewed by a person, not left to automatic recognition.
For courts and tribunals, a written transcript of what was interpreted between NGT and Dutch or English can be prepared afterwards from a recording, giving the parties a reference they can check. Broadcasters and online publishers can also order Dutch subtitles and English captions for the same video in one job.
Our vetted, trained and qualified NGT interpreters can support healthcare providers, courts and international tribunals, employers, educational institutions and conference organisers. SILA Linguists® coordinates interpreters, Deaf interpreters and translators through one project team, works with vetted professionals, and protects every booking with confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.
