Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Vlaamse Gebarentaal (VGT) is the sign language of Deaf people in Flanders, recognised by the Flemish Parliament.
Vlaamse Gebarentaal (VGT)
vgtVGT and French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) both developed from the signing used in Belgian Deaf schools in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which had French Sign Language influence. After Belgium's federalisation, the two communities and languages developed separately. VGT also differs from Dutch Sign Language (NGT) in the Netherlands.
A decree of the Flemish Parliament recognises VGT. Belgium also recognises LSFB in the French Community and German Sign Language in the German-speaking Community. Doof Vlaanderen represents the Flemish Deaf community. VGT has regional variation between the provinces.
VGT is used widely in Flemish media and public life; the Flemish public broadcaster provides programmes with VGT interpreting, and the Flemish Sign Language Advisory Committee advises the government. Many Flemish Deaf people are bilingual in VGT and written Dutch, but written text alone is not a substitute for VGT in complex matters.

Vlaamse Gebarentaal, VGT, is the sign language of Deaf people in Flanders and Brussels. It and French Belgian Sign Language both grew from the signing used in nineteenth and twentieth-century Belgian Deaf schools, then developed separately after federalisation. VGT also differs from Dutch Sign Language in the Netherlands. The Flemish Parliament has officially recognised VGT. SILA Linguists® provides VGT interpreting, video translation and captioning for public administration, healthcare providers, employers, schools and EU and international events in Belgium and beyond.
VGT has regional variation between the provinces, so tell us where the Deaf person comes from. In Brussels, always ask whether they use VGT or LSFB, and for Dutch Deaf clients book NGT instead. Team interpreting is standard for meetings longer than an hour.
We provide VGT interpreting on site and by video remote interpreting for dealings with public administration, hospital and GP appointments, job interviews and workplace meetings, schools, colleges and universities, and conferences. For EU institutions and international events in Brussels, International Sign is commonly provided alongside national sign languages, and we can arrange VGT, LSFB and International Sign teams together. VGT is widely seen in Flemish media and public life, and Deaf audiences rightly expect fluent, natural interpreting.
We translate written Dutch or English, such as government notices, patient leaflets, job information and educational material, into recorded VGT video produced with Deaf translators, and translate signed VGT video into written Dutch or English. Belgian certificates and records are translated and certified by our Dutch and French teams.
Because Belgium recognises three sign languages, including German Sign Language in the German-speaking Community, national organisations sometimes need several signed versions. We coordinate VGT, LSFB and other versions in a single project.
Videos, webinars and conference recordings can be captioned in Dutch, French or English, with written transcripts covering both signed and spoken content.
Flemish broadcasters, schools and public bodies often need Dutch subtitles for hearing viewers as well as VGT for Deaf viewers. We can deliver both, so a single video serves everyone, and for live events we can arrange real-time captioning alongside the VGT interpreters. Transcripts of meetings can be supplied in Dutch, French or English.
Our vetted, trained and qualified VGT interpreters can support public administration, healthcare providers, employers, educational institutions and EU and international event organisers. SILA Linguists® coordinates each assignment through one project team, with vetted professionals, confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protection.
