German is the official language of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, and an official language in Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium. It has regional official status in South Tyrol in Italy, and German-speaking minorities live across Central and Eastern Europe, Namibia and the Americas. It is an official EU language and a major language of business, engineering and research.

German is pluricentric: Germany, Austria and Switzerland each have their own standard variety. Austrian German has distinct vocabulary for food and administration (Jänner for January, Erdäpfel for potatoes), and Swiss Standard German does not use ß. Spoken dialects vary widely. In German-speaking Switzerland, Swiss German dialects are used in almost all everyday conversation, and Bavarian, Swabian, Saxon and Low German are very different from the standard.

German capitalises all nouns, builds long compound words and has three genders and four cases. The official spelling rules are shared across the German-speaking countries.

  • Main areas: Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland
  • Also used: Luxembourg, Italy (Trentino-South Tyrol), Belgium (Liège), Switzerland (Fribourg, Valais)

How we help

German services

SILA Linguists®

German interpreting and translation services with SILA Linguists®

German is official in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein, co-official in Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium, regionally official in South Tyrol, and spoken by minorities across Central and Eastern Europe, Namibia and the Americas. It is a major language of engineering, business and research, and pluricentric: Germany, Austria and Switzerland each have their own standard. SILA Linguists® provides German interpreters, translators and transcribers to engineering and automotive firms, finance, insurance and legal services, courts and police, healthcare and pharmaceutical companies, trade fair organisers and private clients worldwide.

German interpreting, from trade fair to tribunal

German uses Sie for formal and du for familiar address, and titles such as Dr. or Professor are common in professional settings. Our interpreters keep the speaker's register, and for Swiss or Austrian clients, especially in medical or emotional conversations, we look for an interpreter familiar with their regional speech.

Our technical interpreters are prepared for audits, commissioning, training and supplier negotiations in engineering, automotive and manufacturing; for due diligence meetings and claims in finance and insurance; and for face-to-face work with courts, police and solicitors. German conference interpreting, simultaneous and remote simultaneous, covers trade fairs, AGMs and scientific congresses. Telephone interpreting is available at any hour, and video sessions run through our SILA Linguists® app or whatever conferencing tool you prefer.

German translation for Germany, Austria or Switzerland

We translate for the target country, with the right spelling, ß for Germany and Austria and ss for Switzerland, and the right vocabulary and legal terms. German text usually runs longer than English, which affects design and subtitles. Technical documentation, patents, contracts, financial reports, pharmaceutical and clinical texts, and marketing are our core business work, and we localise websites, software and e-commerce for German-speaking markets, with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for large volumes.

Personal, family and civil documents, from birth and marriage certificates to court judgments and degree certificates, are certified with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by the courts, colleges, recruiters and other UK authorities. In Germany, translations for courts and authorities are usually made by translators authorised or sworn by a regional court, and Austria keeps its own list, so check what a German-speaking authority requires.

German transcription and subtitling

We transcribe German meetings, interviews, earnings calls and legal recordings with time codes and translate them into English, handling Swiss German and Austrian speech, and subtitle corporate films, e-learning and broadcast content.

Where our German linguists work

Our vetted, trained and qualified German linguists can support engineering, automotive and manufacturing, finance, insurance and legal services, courts and police, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, conference and trade fair organisers, and private clients with family documents. SILA Linguists® gives every assignment a single coordinator and sector-specialist linguists, and NDAs and UK GDPR protect the material.
