uigUyghur is a Karluk Turkic language, closely related to Uzbek. Most speakers live in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of north-western China, and there are long-established communities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, as well as more recent communities in Turkey, Europe and North America. Speakers commonly also know Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Kazakh, Uzbek or Turkish, depending on where they have lived.
Uyghur has an unusual script history. In China the standard is a modified Arabic alphabet, read right to left, which, unlike most Arabic-based scripts, writes every vowel. A Latin alphabet (Uyghur Latin Yéziqi) is widely used online and in academic transcription, and Uyghurs in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have traditionally used a Cyrillic alphabet. Earlier in the 20th century a different Latin alphabet and a Pinyin-based script were also used, so older documents may appear in these forms.
Dialects are usually grouped as central (including the speech of Ürümqi, Ghulja and Kashgar, on which the standard is based), southern or Hotan, and eastern or Lop. Differences are mainly in pronunciation and vocabulary. Uyghur shares a great deal with Uzbek, but the two have separate written standards and the differences matter in formal work.
Uyghur vocabulary draws on Farsi, Arabic, Russian and Chinese loanwords, and the balance varies with region and generation. Younger speakers educated in China may use more Chinese terms for technical and administrative subjects, while speakers who grew up in Central Asia use more Russian.

Uyghur is a Karluk Turkic language spoken mainly in Xinjiang in north-western China, with long-established communities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan and newer ones in Turkey, Europe and North America. SILA Linguists® provides Uyghur interpreters, translators and language analysts for asylum, legal, healthcare, research and media work in Britain and well beyond it, from Canada and the US to Australia and New Zealand. Vocabulary differs between southern Xinjiang, Ürümqi and Kazakhstan, so we ask where your client grew up and where they have lived since.
We provide Uyghur interpreters for asylum and immigration interviews, appeals, court proceedings, police interviews, mental health assessments and medical appointments. Face-to-face interpreters attend in person, telephone interpreting is reachable every hour of the day, all year, and video interpreting runs over the SILA Linguists® app, or over Teams or Zoom if you prefer. For academic events, media briefings and conferences, simultaneous interpreting, including RSI, can be arranged.
An Uzbek or Turkish interpreter is not a substitute: Uzbek is close, but legal and clinical work demands a first-language Uyghur speaker. Many clients worry about relatives at home, so discretion matters, and every interpreter works under confidentiality agreements. A female or male interpreter can be requested.
In China the Uyghur standard is a modified Arabic alphabet, read right to left and writing every vowel. A Latin alphabet is widely used online and in academic work, and Uyghurs in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have traditionally used Cyrillic. We check the reader's script before starting and typeset with fonts that support all Uyghur letters, including the vowels ö, ü and é, so nothing is lost when a leaflet or statement reaches its reader.
Source documents may be in Uyghur, Chinese or Russian, and personal names often appear in several spellings. Our translators keep spellings consistent and note variants where they matter for identity. Certified translations carry a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as judges, immigration caseworkers and universities, and by prospective employers. Chinese, Uyghur or Turkish papers for US or Canadian authorities are certified in the form they expect.
We transcribe and translate Uyghur audio and video for legal evidence, research and journalism, with time stamps and subtitles where needed.
SILA Linguists® also provides LADO reports for Uyghur, the linguistic analysis used to establish where someone grew up, assessing the regional and dialectal features of a person's speech, from the central varieties of Ürümqi, Ghulja and Kashgar to the southern Hotan and eastern Lop varieties.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Uyghur linguists can support immigration and asylum lawyers, tribunals, police, NHS and mental health services, universities, researchers, human rights organisations and media producers. One dedicated coordinator manages each assignment, and vetted linguists handle personal data under UK GDPR. Uyghur interpreters can support asylum hearings, refugee claims, researchers and media in the United States and Canada, as well as UK services.
