Kazakh belongs to the Kipchak branch of the Turkic family and is closely related to Kyrgyz and Karakalpak. It is the state language of Kazakhstan, where Russian also has official status and remains widely used, particularly in cities and business. Kazakh is also spoken by communities in China's Xinjiang region, western Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Russia.

Kazakh dialect differences are relatively small, and the standard language is understood throughout the country. The main variation between speakers is in how much Russian they use: many urban Kazakhs are more fluent in Russian than in Kazakh, while rural speakers and Kazakhs from China and Mongolia may speak little Russian.

Kazakh services

SILA Linguists®

Kazakh interpreters and Kazakh translation with SILA Linguists®

Kazakh is the state language of Kazakhstan, where Russian remains widely used in cities and in business, and it is also spoken by Kazakh communities in Xinjiang, western Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Russia. SILA Linguists® provides Kazakh interpreters and translators to energy and mining companies, investors, law firms, universities and public services in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Dialect differences are small, but Russian use varies enormously, so we ask whether the person prefers Kazakh or Russian, and where they grew up.

Kazakh interpreting for industry, law and family matters

In contract negotiations, engineering meetings and site inductions, Kazakhstan's business and legal terminology is often more familiar in Russian, so we can provide an interpreter who moves confidently between Kazakh, Russian and English. Kazakhs from China or Mongolia, on the other hand, may use different loanwords and know little Russian, and we match them with an interpreter who understands their background.

Our Kazakh interpreting services include face-to-face work at meetings, hearings, medical appointments and immigration interviews, telephone interpreting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. For investor forums and industry conferences we arrange consecutive and simultaneous interpreters, and remote simultaneous interpreting for hybrid events.

Kazakh translation in Cyrillic, Latin and Arabic script

Kazakh has been written in Cyrillic for decades; Kazakhstan is now moving in phases to a Latin alphabet, and Kazakhs in China use an Arabic-based script. We confirm the target script before starting. Many official documents from Kazakhstan are bilingual in Kazakh and Russian, and we translate whichever version the receiving authority requires.

We translate production sharing and supply contracts, technical manuals, environmental and safety documents, corporate filings, birth and marriage certificates, diplomas and transcripts. Certified Kazakh translation includes a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by employers.

Kazakh transcription

We transcribe Kazakh meetings, interviews and recorded evidence, marking every switch into Russian, and provide time-stamped transcripts with an English translation. Video content for training and corporate communications can be subtitled in Kazakh or English. For mining and energy clients we can build a glossary of site, equipment and safety terms at the start of a project, so interpreters, translators and subtitlers all use the same agreed Kazakh and Russian terminology.

Sectors we support in Kazakh

Our vetted, trained and qualified Kazakh linguists can support energy, mining and engineering companies, investors and banks, commercial law firms, immigration advisers, schools and universities. With SILA Linguists® you work with one project team, and confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR safeguard every document.

Good to know

Working with Kazakh

Interpreting

  • Ask the person whether they prefer Kazakh or Russian. Both are reasonable choices, and the answer depends on their background, not on their nationality.
  • Kazakh speakers from China or Mongolia may use different loanwords and be unfamiliar with Russian terms, so tell us where the person grew up.
  • Kazakh interpreting is available face to face, by video and by telephone, and for business meetings and conferences.
  • Business and legal terminology in Kazakhstan is often more familiar in Russian. In contract negotiations, energy projects or court proceedings, interpreters may need to handle both Kazakh and Russian terms. Mention this when booking so we can assign someone who works in both.

Translation

  • Kazakh has long been written mainly in Cyrillic, with nine additional letters. Kazakhstan has begun a phased transition to a Latin-based alphabet, which has been revised along the way, so both scripts may appear in documents for some years. Kazakhs in China use an Arabic-based script. We confirm the target script before starting.
  • Many official documents from Kazakhstan are bilingual in Kazakh and Russian. We translate whichever language the certifying authority requires, and certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
