Thai is a tonal Tai language of the Kra-Dai family, with five tones. Standard Thai is based on the speech of Bangkok and central Thailand. Other Tai languages are spoken as first languages in other regions: Isan (closely related to Lao) in the north-east, Northern Thai (Kham Mueang) in the north and Southern Thai in the south. Most Thai people use standard Thai fluently as well.

Thai has an extensive system of politeness, including the particles khrap (used by men) and kha (used by women) at the end of sentences, and special vocabulary for royalty and monks. Many words come from Pali, Sanskrit, Khmer and, more recently, English.

How we help

Thai services

SILA Linguists®

Thai interpreting, translation and localisation with SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® supplies Thai interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration advisers, healthcare teams, family services, courts and businesses, whether they are based in the UK, North America, Australia or New Zealand. Standard Thai, rooted in the speech of Bangkok and the central plains, is understood across the country, yet many people grew up speaking Isan in the north-east, Kham Mueang in the north or Southern Thai at home. Knowing the region helps us choose an interpreter who will put an older client, in particular, at ease from the first sentence.

Thai interpreters for spouses, patients and partners

Our Thai interpreters are experienced in spouse and family visa applications, GP and maternity appointments, domestic abuse support, family court hearings and police interviews. We attend in person, provide telephone interpreting 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and run video sessions through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreters are also available for tourism, hospitality and trade events.

Thai conversation is polite and often indirect, marked by the particles khrap and kha, and clients may avoid open disagreement. Our interpreters convey hesitation and nuance faithfully, so professionals can spot discomfort or confusion. In healthcare and abuse cases many women prefer a female interpreter, and we arrange this whenever it is requested. For clients from Laos, we usually recommend a Lao interpreter instead.

Certified Thai translation and Thai localisation

Thai official records use the Buddhist Era calendar, 543 years ahead of the Gregorian one, so our certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, name-change documents and house registration books (tabien baan) present dates in a form authorities can verify. Names follow the passport romanisation, which often differs from the Royal Thai General System, and the signed statement of accuracy is accepted by the Home Office, courts and other UK bodies. Thai certificates for Australian authorities can be NAATI-certified, and those for US immigration carry a signed certificate of accuracy.

For brands entering the Thai market we localise websites, apps, packaging and marketing campaigns. Thai is written without spaces between words, so software needs proper word-breaking and fonts must place tone marks correctly; our team checks layouts in context before anything goes live.

Thai transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Thai interviews, recorded calls, messaging app voice notes and video content with time stamps and English translation. Subtitling of Thai films, training videos and promotional clips is handled by linguists who understand both the language and the humour, honorifics and cultural references that a literal subtitle would miss.

Sectors we support in Thai

Our vetted, trained and qualified Thai linguists can support immigration solicitors, family law practices, domestic abuse services, the NHS, local authorities, tourism and hospitality companies, food importers, and consumer brands launching in Thailand. You deal with a single project coordinator, and every vetted linguist works under a confidentiality agreement and UK GDPR. Thai interpreting covers courts, hospitals, immigration interviews and family matters in the United States and Australia as well as the UK.

Good to know

Working with Thai

Interpreting

  • Most clients from Thailand are comfortable with standard Thai. For older clients from the north-east, an interpreter who understands Isan can be helpful, and for clients from Laos, a Lao interpreter is usually better.
  • Thai communication tends to be polite and indirect, and clients may avoid open disagreement. Interpreters convey meaning faithfully, including hesitations that may signal discomfort or misunderstanding.
  • Some clients, particularly in healthcare, family or domestic abuse cases, may prefer an interpreter of the same gender. We take this into account when requested.
  • Thai interpreters are available face to face, by video and by telephone.

Translation

  • Thai is written left to right in the Thai script, with no spaces between words; spaces mark the ends of phrases or sentences. Software needs Thai word-breaking for correct line wrapping, and Unicode Thai fonts with correct tone mark positioning.
  • Thai official documents use the Buddhist Era calendar, which is 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. Our certified translations of Thai birth, marriage, name-change and household registration documents give the dates in a form authorities can check.
  • Thai names include a given name and surname, often with a nickname used in daily life. We follow the passport romanisation, which can differ from the Royal Thai General System of Transcription.
