Pwo Karen interpreting and translation

Pwo Karen is one of the two main Karen languages, spoken in southern and eastern Myanmar and in western and northern Thailand. We provide Pwo Karen interpreters and translators; tell us where the client's family comes from so we can match the right variety.

Pwo Karen belongs to the Karenic branch of the Sino-Tibetan family. Like other Karen languages, and unlike Burmese, it places the verb before the object. Pwo is a cluster of related varieties that are often treated separately: Eastern Pwo, spoken mainly in Kayin and Mon States; Western Pwo, spoken in the Ayeyarwady delta and the Bago and Yangon regions; and Northern Pwo and Phrae Pwo, both spoken in Thailand.

The varieties differ in sounds and vocabulary, and speakers of distant varieties understand each other only partly. Pwo Karen is also distinct from S'gaw Karen, the other large Karen language, and the two are not mutually intelligible. Many Pwo speakers also use Burmese or Thai.

Decades of conflict in eastern Myanmar have displaced many Karen people. Pwo Karen speakers live in the refugee camps along the Thai border and in communities resettled in the United States, Australia, Canada, the UK and other European countries.

  • Main areas: Myanmar (Kayin State, Mon State, Ayeyarwady, Bago, Yangon)
  • Also used: Thailand (Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Lampang, Tak)
  • Other regions

How we help

Pwo Karen services

SILA Linguists®

Pwo Karen interpreters and translators for refugee and community support with SILA Linguists®

Pwo Karen speakers have been displaced by decades of conflict in eastern Myanmar, and many now live in camps on the Thai border or in resettled communities in the United States, Australia, Canada, Britain and elsewhere in Europe. SILA Linguists® provides Pwo Karen interpreting and translation for resettlement teams, health services, schools and immigration advisers. Pwo is a cluster of varieties: Eastern Pwo from Kayin and Mon States, Western Pwo from the Ayeyarwady delta, and Northern and Phrae Pwo in Thailand. We match the variety to the client.

Pwo Karen interpreting, never a substitute language

Pwo Karen and S'gaw Karen are not mutually intelligible, so we never send a S'gaw interpreter to a Pwo speaker. Burmese is not a safe fallback either: it may be a second language at best, and for people who have lived through conflict it can carry painful associations. Tell us where the client or their family comes from, or which camp they lived in, and we will find an interpreter who knows their variety.

Our interpreters work face to face at resettlement orientation, GP and hospital appointments, mental health sessions, school admissions and adult education classes, housing visits and asylum interviews. Telephone interpreting runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform helps where local interpreters are scarce. In trauma-related work our interpreters stay calm, steady and strictly confidential, and a female or male interpreter can be requested.

Pwo Karen translation, scripts and documents

In Myanmar, Pwo Karen is written in a script derived from the Mon-Burmese alphabet with extra letters encoded in Unicode, and Eastern and Western Pwo follow different spelling traditions. Some Eastern Pwo communities use the Leke script, and speakers in Thailand often write Pwo in Thai script. We confirm variety, script and spelling before starting, deliver Unicode text and check typeset proofs, because older fonts can drop the Karen letters.

Myanmar identity and civil documents are usually in Burmese, and Thai documents in Thai, so certified translation of those papers is normally from Burmese or Thai, which we can arrange in the same project, with a signed statement of accuracy accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office and the courts. Burmese or Thai papers that American, Canadian or Australian officials need are certified to their requirements, including NAATI-certified translation in Australia. Pwo Karen translation is most often needed for health information, resettlement guidance and school letters, frequently supported by audio recordings for readers with limited literacy.

Transcription and LADO for Pwo Karen

We transcribe recorded interviews and community audio with time stamps and English translation. For asylum and immigration cases, we can also arrange language analysis for the determination of origin (LADO) through specialist linguists.

Good to know

Working with Pwo Karen

Interpreting

  • When booking, tell us where the client or their family is from. A person from the Ayeyarwady delta usually speaks Western Pwo, while someone from Kayin or Mon State, or from a Thai border camp, is more likely to speak Eastern Pwo. People from northern Thailand may speak Northern or Phrae Pwo. We use this to match an interpreter who knows the client's variety.
  • Do not book a S'gaw Karen interpreter for a Pwo speaker, and do not assume Burmese will do. Burmese may be a second language, and for some people who have lived through conflict it carries painful associations. Ask which language the client prefers.
  • Pwo Karen interpreting is provided face to face, by video and by telephone. In asylum, resettlement and mental health work, interpreters keep a calm, trauma-informed approach, and strict confidentiality applies.

Translation

  • In Myanmar, Pwo Karen is mainly written in a script derived from the Mon-Burmese alphabet, with extra letters for Pwo sounds that are encoded in the Myanmar block of Unicode. Eastern and Western Pwo have different spelling traditions. Some Eastern Pwo communities also use the Leke script, and Pwo speakers in Thailand often write their language in Thai script.
  • We confirm the variety, script and spelling before work starts, deliver Unicode text and check typeset proofs, because some older fonts do not display the Karen letters correctly.
  • Official documents from Myanmar are usually in Burmese, and from Thailand in Thai, so certified translation of identity and civil documents is normally from those languages. Pwo Karen translation is most often needed for health information, resettlement guidance, school letters and audio recordings for people who read little.
