Tajik is the state language of Tajikistan and is also spoken in Uzbekistan, notably in Samarkand and Bukhara, and by migrant workers in Russia. Linguistically it is closely related to Farsi and Dari, sharing their grammar and core vocabulary, but it developed separately during the Soviet period and was standardised as a language in its own right.

Tajik contains many Russian loanwords and some Uzbek influence, and its pronunciation differs from Farsi. Speakers of Farsi and Tajik can usually understand each other in conversation, but not always with the precision needed for legal or medical interpreting.

How we help

Tajik services

SILA Linguists®

Tajik interpreters and Tajik translation services by SILA Linguists®

Tajik is the state language of Tajikistan and is spoken in Samarkand and Bukhara in Uzbekistan and by many migrant workers in Russia. It shares its grammar and core vocabulary with Farsi and Dari but developed separately during the Soviet period, with Russian loanwords and its own pronunciation. SILA Linguists® provides Tajik interpreters, translators and transcribers for immigration advisers, healthcare teams, humanitarian organisations and energy businesses in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. For people from Tajikistan we book a Tajik interpreter, because a conversation between a Farsi interpreter and a Tajik speaker rarely achieves the precision that legal and medical work demands.

Tajik interpreting matched to the client

Many Tajiks also speak Russian and some prefer it in official settings, so we ask the client first. People from Gorno-Badakhshan may speak a Pamiri language such as Shughni as their first language; tell us if the person is from Badakhshan and we will advise on the best match.

Our Tajik interpreting covers face-to-face work at family and immigration hearings, GP and hospital appointments, and meetings with social workers or employers. Telephone interpreting is available at any time of day, every day of the year, and video interpreting runs through the SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom and similar platforms. Development agencies and energy companies can book consecutive interpreters for field visits and stakeholder meetings, and simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreters for workshops and conferences.

Tajik translation in Cyrillic script

Tajik is written in Cyrillic with six additional letters, ғ, ӣ, қ, ӯ, ҳ and ҷ. Readers in Tajikistan generally cannot read the Arabic-based script used for Farsi, so materials for Tajik audiences must be in Cyrillic, and documents written in Arabic script need a Farsi or Dari translator.

Official documents from Tajikistan may be in Tajik, Russian or both. We translate birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, employment records, court papers, medical reports, project documents and grant reports. Certified Tajik translation includes a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, educational institutions and international bodies.

Tajik transcription

We transcribe interviews, recorded statements, focus groups and monitoring and evaluation recordings in Tajik, with time stamps and an English translation. Russian words and phrases, which are common in Tajik speech, are marked so nothing is lost in the record. This is useful to humanitarian and development teams for beneficiary feedback and programme reviews.

Sectors we support in Tajik

Our vetted, trained and qualified Tajik linguists can support immigration and family law, NHS and private healthcare, development and humanitarian organisations, and businesses working in energy and infrastructure in Central Asia. SILA Linguists® coordinates every assignment through one project team, using vetted linguists who are bound by confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Tajik

Interpreting

  • Book a Tajik interpreter for people from Tajikistan. Many also speak Russian, and some may prefer it in official settings, so ask the client.
  • Speakers from the Pamir region (Gorno-Badakhshan) may have a Pamiri language, such as Shughni, as their first language. Tell us if the person is from Badakhshan.
  • Tajik interpreting is available face to face, by video and by telephone.

Translation

  • Tajik is written in a Cyrillic alphabet with six additional letters (ғ, ӣ, қ, ӯ, ҳ, ҷ). Readers in Tajikistan cannot generally read the Arabic-based script used for Farsi, so translations for Tajik audiences should be in Cyrillic, and documents in Arabic-based script need a Farsi or Dari translator.
  • Official documents from Tajikistan may be in Tajik, Russian or both. Certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies.
