Pamiri interpreting and translation

Pamiri is the everyday name for a cluster of small Eastern Iranian languages spoken high in the Pamir mountains. We provide interpreters for Shughni, Wakhi and the other Pamir languages, matched to the client's own valley.

Pamiri is an umbrella term rather than a single language. It covers the Pamir languages, a group of Eastern Iranian languages spoken in the mountain valleys along the upper Panj river and its tributaries. The best known are Shughni, with the closely related Rushani and Bartangi, Wakhi, Yazghulami and Ishkashimi; Sarikoli in China and Munji in Afghanistan are usually counted in the group as well. They are distant relatives of Tajik and Dari, yet a Tajik or Dari speaker who has not grown up with them cannot follow a conversation.

Most speakers of Shughni, Rushani and Yazghulami live in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan, around Khorog and in the Shughnan, Rushan and Bartang valleys, and Shughni is also spoken across the river in Afghan Badakhshan. Wakhi has the widest spread of all: the Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan, the Ishkashim district of Tajikistan, Gojal (Upper Hunza) and neighbouring valleys in northern Pakistan, and Taxkorgan in Xinjiang, China. The languages differ so much that a Shughni speaker and a Wakhi speaker normally use Tajik, Dari or Russian with each other.

  • Main areas: Tajikistan (Gorno-Badakhshan)
  • Also used: Afghanistan (Badakhshan), Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan)

Pamiri services

SILA Linguists®

Pamiri languages: Shughni, Wakhi and Rushani interpreting with SILA Linguists®

Pamiri is an umbrella term for the Eastern Iranian languages of the mountain valleys along the upper Panj river: Shughni with Rushani and Bartangi, Wakhi, Yazghulami and Ishkashimi, with Sarikoli in China and Munji in Afghanistan. Most speakers of Shughni, Rushani and Yazghulami live in Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan around Khorog. SILA Linguists® provides Pamiri interpreters, transcribers and translators for asylum services, healthcare providers, police, courts and researchers in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. A Tajik or Dari speaker cannot follow these languages, so we start with the language name and home valley.

Pamiri interpreting by valley and language

Tell us the language and the home valley or village, for example Shughnan, Rushan, Bartang or Wakhan, and we assign an interpreter who speaks that variety. Many people from Gorno-Badakhshan are fluent in Tajik and Russian, and people from Afghan Badakhshan usually speak Dari. Some clients choose one of those for official appointments; others give a fuller, more confident account in their home language. We provide both, and relay through Tajik, Dari or Russian is possible with the client's agreement.

Wakhi has the widest spread of all, from the Wakhan corridor of Afghanistan and Ishkashim in Tajikistan to Gojal in Pakistan and Xinjiang, so its speakers' second languages vary. Pamiri interpreters are rare, so remote work is often the answer: telephone interpreting around the clock and video sessions on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Face-to-face sessions can be arranged for asylum interviews, hospital visits, police interviews and court hearings where an interpreter is available.

Translation and documents from Badakhshan

The Pamir languages have no widely used written standard. Speakers in Tajikistan usually adapt the Tajik Cyrillic alphabet, Latin spellings appear in teaching materials and online, and Arabic-script spellings are used in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Official documents from the region are in Tajik, Dari, Pashto, Urdu or English, so certified translation works from those, signed as accurate, accepted by UK authorities such as courts and universities. Tajik, Dari or Russian documents for North American authorities are certified the way each asks.

Transcription, oral history and LADO

Most Pamiri written work is transcription and translation of recorded interviews, statements and oral history. We time-code each transcript, tag Tajik, Dari or Russian passages and add an English version. Because origin questions arise for people from Afghan and Tajik Badakhshan, SILA Linguists® can arrange LADO and nationality assessment for Pamiri speakers.

Sectors we support in the Pamir languages

Our vetted, trained and qualified Pamiri linguists can support asylum and immigration representatives, healthcare providers, police and courts, families and community groups, and research and oral history projects. A single coordinator manages each booking, linguists are vetted and sign non-disclosure agreements, and UK GDPR protects every recording. Pamiri interpreting is also offered for immigration hearings and health appointments in the United States and Canada, mostly by video.

Working with Pamiri

Interpreting

  • Start with the language name and the home valley or village, for example Shughnan, Rushan, Bartang or Wakhan, so that we can assign an interpreter who speaks that variety. Many people from Gorno-Badakhshan are also fluent in Tajik and Russian, and people from Afghan Badakhshan usually speak Dari. Some clients choose one of those languages for official appointments; others give a fuller and more confident account in their home language. We provide both, and relay through Tajik, Dari or Russian is available if the client prefers it.
  • Video and telephone interpreting work well for families spread between Central Asia, Russia, Europe and North America. For immigration cases where knowledge of the region matters, SILA also carries out LADO and nationality assessment.

Translation

  • The Pamir languages have no widely used written standard. Speakers in Tajikistan who write their language usually adapt the Tajik Cyrillic alphabet, Latin spellings appear in teaching materials and online, and Arabic-script spellings are used in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Official documents from the region are in Tajik, Dari, Pashto, Urdu or English, so certified translation normally works from those languages. Pamiri work is mostly transcription and translation of recorded interviews, statements and voice messages, with the spelling convention agreed with you first.
