Tagalog interpreting and translation

Tagalog is the first language of Manila and the surrounding regions of Luzon, and the language on which standard Filipino is based. We provide Tagalog interpreters and translators for clients who speak it as their mother tongue.

Tagalog is an Austronesian language of the Central Philippine group. It is spoken at home in more Philippine households than any other language. Its heartland is Metro Manila and the provinces of central and southern Luzon, such as Bulacan, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon and Nueva Ecija, as well as parts of Mindoro and Marinduque.

Standard Filipino, the national language, was developed from Tagalog, so the two are structurally the same language and fully mutually intelligible. The word Tagalog is used for the mother tongue and its regional forms, while Filipino is the name for the national standard taught to all Filipinos. Our Filipino page covers the national standard. Tagalog itself varies by region: Batangas Tagalog, for example, has distinctive vocabulary and intonation, and Manila speech freely mixes in English (Taglish).

How we help

Tagalog services

SILA Linguists®

Tagalog interpreters, translators and subtitlers from SILA Linguists®

Tagalog is the mother tongue of Metro Manila and much of central and southern Luzon, and the basis of standard Filipino. SILA Linguists® provides Tagalog interpreters, translators, transcribers and subtitlers to care providers, employers, lawyers and public services in the UK, across North America and in Australia and New Zealand. Filipino nurses, carers, seafarers and their families form a large part of that audience, and many mix English freely into their speech, so we match linguists who handle Taglish and regional accents such as Batangueño with ease.

Tagalog interpreting in care, work and law

Face-to-face Tagalog interpreting is available for hospitals, care homes, employment tribunals and solicitors' offices. Telephone interpreting operates at any hour, weekends and holidays included, which suits night-shift staff and urgent welfare calls, and video interpreting is available through the SILA Linguists® app or your existing platform. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreters can be booked for recruitment events, training and conferences.

Respect is built into Tagalog through po and opo and forms of address such as kuya, ate, lola and lolo, and our interpreters use them naturally so older clients feel at ease. Because many Filipinos avoid a direct no or hesitate to admit confusion, interpreters check understanding politely without changing what was said. A female or male interpreter can be provided where the subject calls for it.

Tagalog and Filipino translation

Most Philippine civil records are issued in English, so Tagalog translation work focuses on what people actually need to read: workplace policies, health and safety inductions, consent forms, tenancy guidance, public information and letters from employers or agencies. For audiences from across the Philippines we follow standard Filipino conventions; for a Manila or Batangas readership we can reflect local vocabulary.

Where Tagalog documents, messages or statements are needed as evidence, certified translation into English includes a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts and the Home Office, and by employers.

Tagalog transcription and subtitling

Our transcribers and subtitlers are experienced with Tagalog-language film, television, social media clips and recorded interviews. We produce time-stamped transcripts, translate them into English and create subtitles, keeping the code-switching between Tagalog and English visible where it matters to meaning. For broadcasters and online publishers we can also deliver subtitle files timed to your video, checked by a second linguist before release.

Sectors we support in Tagalog

Our vetted, trained and qualified Tagalog linguists can support the NHS and private healthcare, care home groups, recruitment agencies, shipping and seafarer welfare organisations, immigration advisers, legal teams and community information campaigns. Book once and one project team handles the rest, with vetted linguists bound by signed confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Tagalog

Interpreting

  • For a client from Manila or central Luzon, a Tagalog or Filipino interpreter is the natural choice. Interpreters adapt to regional accents such as Batangueño and to the client's degree of English mixing.
  • Respect is shown with the particles po and opo and with forms of address such as kuya, ate, lola and lolo. Interpreters use these naturally, which helps older clients feel at ease.
  • Clients may avoid saying no directly or admitting they have not understood. Interpreters can support clear understanding by checking back in a respectful way.
  • Tagalog interpreters are widely available by telephone and video, and face to face in many areas.

Translation

  • Tagalog is written in the Latin alphabet. For written translations aimed at Filipinos from all regions, we use the standard Filipino conventions of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino. For materials aimed at a specific Tagalog-speaking area, we can reflect regional vocabulary if you wish.
  • Most Philippine official documents are in English. Tagalog or Filipino translation is used for public information, workplace materials, consent forms and subtitling of Tagalog-language video.
