Cebuano is an Austronesian language of the Bisayan (Visayan) group. It is the main language of Cebu, Bohol, eastern Negros and southern Leyte, and the lingua franca of most of Mindanao. Many speakers simply call their language Bisaya or Binisaya.

Cebuano is distinct from Tagalog and Filipino, though most Cebuano speakers learn Filipino and English at school. It has regional varieties, including the speech of Cebu City, Bohol and Mindanao, which are generally mutually intelligible. Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) and Waray are related Bisayan languages but are separate languages.

How we help

Cebuano services

SILA Linguists®

Cebuano (Bisaya) interpreting and translation from SILA Linguists®

Filipino nurses, carers and seafarers are a familiar part of the workforce in Britain and around the world, and many of them grew up speaking Cebuano. SILA Linguists® provides Cebuano interpreters and translators for hospitals, care providers, employers, maritime welfare organisations and family services. Cebuano is the main language of Cebu, Bohol, eastern Negros and southern Leyte and the lingua franca of most of Mindanao. Because Bisaya is used loosely for several Visayan languages, we confirm the client speaks Cebuano rather than Hiligaynon or Waray before booking.

Interpreting in Cebuano when the stakes are high

Many Cebuano speakers are fluent in English and Filipino, and for everyday conversations that may be enough. In a hospital admission, an employment dispute, a disciplinary hearing or a police interview, though, people tend to express themselves more fully in their first language. Our Cebuano interpreters bring that clarity to care home reviews, GP appointments, workers' rights advice, immigration matters and family support meetings.

Video and telephone interpreting are often the fastest way to reach a Cebuano interpreter, especially outside areas with large Filipino communities. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which suits crew on vessels in port, and video sessions run on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. Face-to-face and consecutive interpreting can be arranged for tribunals, welfare visits and community meetings, with a female or male interpreter on request.

Cebuano translation for workplaces and communities

Official documents from the Philippines are normally issued in English, so most Cebuano translation is for information people need to understand and act on: consent forms, employment contracts and workplace guidance, health and safety rules, seafarer welfare material, tenancy information and community outreach. Our translators use the vocabulary everyday readers recognise, including familiar Spanish and English loanwords, rather than formal coinages nobody uses.

When a document written in Cebuano must go to an authority, as with a personal statement or letters and messages used as evidence, we translate it into English and provide a certified translation with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, tribunals and the Home Office, and by employers.

Cebuano transcription

We transcribe Cebuano audio and video, including workplace investigation interviews, recorded calls and research interviews, delivering time-stamped transcripts with an English translation. Cebuano conversation often blends Filipino and English; our transcribers mark those switches so the record stays reliable.

Where we can help in Cebuano

Our vetted, trained and qualified Cebuano linguists can support NHS trusts and care homes, recruitment agencies, employment lawyers, trade unions and workers' advice services, shipping companies and seafarer welfare charities, immigration advisers and local authority family services. SILA Linguists® gives you a single project team, vetted linguists, confidentiality agreements on every job and UK GDPR-compliant handling of personal data.

Good to know

Working with Cebuano

Interpreting

  • Many Cebuano speakers are fluent in English and Filipino, but in stressful situations, such as a hospital admission, an employment dispute or a police interview, people often express themselves more fully in their first language.
  • The word Bisaya is used loosely in the Philippines for several Visayan languages. Check that the client speaks Cebuano rather than Hiligaynon or Waray before booking.
  • Video and telephone interpreting work well, and are often the fastest way to reach a Cebuano interpreter outside areas with large Filipino communities.

Translation

  • Cebuano is written in the Latin alphabet with relatively phonetic spelling, though spelling conventions vary. Official documents from the Philippines are normally issued in English, so translation into Cebuano is usually for information materials, consent forms, workplace guidance and community outreach.
  • Cebuano texts readily absorb Spanish and English loanwords. We use terminology that everyday readers recognise rather than unfamiliar formal coinages.
