Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Língua Gestual Portuguesa (LGP) is the sign language of the Deaf community in Portugal and is protected by the Portuguese Constitution.
Língua Gestual Portuguesa (LGP)
psrLGP has an unusual history: Deaf education in Portugal began in the nineteenth century with a Swedish teacher, Pär Aron Borg, and LGP is therefore placed in the Swedish Sign Language family. It is unrelated to Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), despite the shared spoken language, and different from Spanish Sign Language.
Article 74 of the Portuguese Constitution requires the state to protect and promote LGP as a cultural expression and means of access to education. The Federação Portuguesa das Associações de Surdos represents the community.

Língua Gestual Portuguesa, LGP, has an unusual history: Deaf education in Portugal began in the nineteenth century with the Swedish teacher Pär Aron Borg, so LGP belongs to the Swedish Sign Language family. It is unrelated to Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), despite the shared spoken language, and different from Spanish Sign Language. The Portuguese Constitution requires the state to protect and promote it. SILA Linguists® offers LGP interpreters, signed video and captions for hospitals, courts, schools and employers, in Portugal and among Portuguese Deaf communities in France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the UK and beyond.
Do not book a Brazilian Libras interpreter for a Portuguese Deaf person, or the reverse: the two languages are unrelated. Tell us where in Portugal the Deaf person went to school, as some signs differ between regions, and mention any preference for the interpreter's gender.
We provide LGP interpreting on site and by video for hospital and clinic appointments, court hearings, schools and universities, and employment and workplace meetings. Portuguese Deaf communities in France, Switzerland and Luxembourg sometimes combine LGP with the local sign language, so we ask each person which they prefer. Our interpreters follow current usage in the Portuguese Deaf community. Long sessions are covered by two interpreters.
Many Portuguese Deaf people working abroad in hospitality, construction or care settings appreciate interpreting for workplace meetings and training, and we can arrange regular sessions with the same LGP interpreter so that colleagues and managers get used to working together.
Portuguese or English documents, from patient letters and court notices to school messages and job paperwork, are signed into recorded LGP by Deaf translators, and signed LGP footage can be written up in Portuguese or English. Portuguese civil and academic certificates are certified by our Portuguese translators.
Organisations producing material for both Portuguese and Brazilian Deaf audiences need two separate signed versions, and we can coordinate LGP and Libras videos in one project.
Portuguese public bodies have a constitutional duty to promote LGP, and accessible signed content on websites, forms and public campaigns is an effective way to meet that duty for Deaf citizens at home and abroad.
Portuguese or English captions can be added to LGP videos and recorded meetings, and every file is checked by a human.
Our vetted, trained and qualified LGP interpreters can support healthcare providers, courts, schools and universities, and employers. LGP requests are coordinated by one SILA Linguists® contact, interpreters are vetted, and Portuguese Deaf clients' privacy is protected by non-disclosure agreements and UK GDPR.
