Slovenian is the official language of Slovenia and an official EU language. Recognised Slovenian-speaking minorities live in north-eastern Italy, southern Austria and western Hungary, and there are emigrant communities in Germany, Argentina, Canada, the United States and Australia.

For a small language area, Slovenian has remarkable dialect diversity, with seven main dialect groups and many local dialects, some of which are hard for other Slovenians to follow. It is one of the few Indo-European languages that still has a dual form, used for exactly two people or things, alongside singular and plural. Slovenian is related to Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian, but it is a distinct language and not readily mutually intelligible in detailed conversation.

Slovenian uses the Latin alphabet with the letters č, š and ž. An official language institute publishes the standard dictionary and spelling rules.

SILA Linguists®

Slovenian (Slovene) interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

Slovenian, slovenščina, is the official language of Slovenia and an official EU language, with recognised minorities in Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Italy, Carinthia and Styria in Austria and the Rába area of Hungary, and emigrant communities in Germany, Argentina, Canada, the United States and Australia. For a small language it has unusual dialect diversity, and it keeps the dual, a grammatical form for exactly two. SILA Linguists® supplies Slovenian interpreters, translators and transcribers to courts, healthcare, pharmaceutical and manufacturing firms, logistics, tourism, trade and universities.

Slovenian interpreters, not a near neighbour

We book a Slovenian interpreter rather than one for a related South Slavic language, especially for legal and medical work, because Croatian or Serbian speakers do not reliably follow Slovenian detail. Slovenian uses formal vi and familiar ti, and the dual also affects how two people are addressed together, something our interpreters handle without thinking twice. With seven main dialect groups, some hard even for other Slovenians, it helps to tell us where your client grew up.

Video and telephone are practical formats for a language with a small diaspora: a Slovenian interpreter can join by phone day or night, or on video through our SILA Linguists® app or Teams and similar tools. Face-to-face interpreters are arranged for hearings and complex medical appointments, and for pharmaceutical, manufacturing and logistics companies we provide consecutive or simultaneous interpreting for audits, plant visits and negotiations.

Slovenian translation and certification

Translations must handle the dual correctly, a frequent source of error in machine output and in text written by non-native speakers, and keep č, š and ž in names and addresses. For pharmaceutical and manufacturing clients we translate regulatory files, product information, technical manuals and quality documentation; for tourism, websites, booking platforms and brochures. AI-assisted drafts are always post-edited by a Slovenian linguist.

Court judgments, civil status records, degree certificates and company papers are certified in English with our signed and dated statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. Slovenian records for the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their rules, through NAATI-certified translators in Australia. In Slovenia itself, official translations are certified by court interpreters appointed by the Ministry of Justice, so check what a Slovenian authority asks for.

Slovenian transcription and subtitling

Interviews, research recordings and corporate video in Slovenian are transcribed with timings and an English text alongside, with dialect passages handled by native speakers, and we subtitle films and training material.

Where we can help in Slovenian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Slovenian linguists can support courts and legal services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing and logistics, tourism, trading companies, and universities and research partnerships. SILA Linguists® assigns one accountable contact, chooses Slovenian specialists for your subject and keeps documents confidential under NDAs and UK GDPR. Slovenian interpreting is also offered for legal, medical and business appointments in Australia, Canada and the United States.

Good to know

Working with Slovenian

Interpreting

  • Book a Slovenian interpreter rather than one for a related South Slavic language, especially for legal and medical work. Slovenian uses formal vi and familiar ti, and interpreters follow the appropriate register; the dual form also affects how people are addressed in pairs.
  • Video and telephone interpreting are practical for Slovenian, with face-to-face interpreters arranged for hearings and complex appointments.

Translation

  • Translations must handle the dual correctly, which is a frequent source of error for non-specialist and non-native writers. Diacritics č, š and ž must be preserved in names and addresses.
  • In Slovenia, official translations are certified by court interpreters (sodni tolmači) appointed by the Ministry of Justice. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents going to Slovenian authorities may need a translation by a Slovenian court interpreter. Where a document is needed in the United States, Canada or Australia, we arrange the certification the receiving authority expects, from a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities to NAATI-certified translation for Australia.
