Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and an official EU language. It is spoken by minorities in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia (Vojvodina), Romania and Ukraine, and by communities in the UK, Ireland, Austria and the United States. Slovak and Czech are closely related, and many speakers understand each other well.

Slovak dialects are usually grouped as western, central and eastern. The standard language is based mainly on central dialects, while eastern Slovak speech can be quite different and may be harder for some interpreters to follow. Slovakia also has a large Hungarian-speaking minority in the south, and some Slovak citizens speak Hungarian or Romani at home.

Slovak uses the Latin alphabet with letters such as ä, č, ď, ľ, ĺ, ň, ô, ŕ, š, ť and ž.

How we help

Slovak services

SILA Linguists®

Slovak interpreters and Slovak translation services from SILA Linguists®

Slovak, slovenčina, is the official language of Slovakia and an official EU language, spoken by minorities in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Vojvodina in Serbia, Romania and Ukraine, and by communities in the UK, Ireland, Austria and the United States. It is close to Czech, and its standard rests on central dialects, while eastern Slovak speech can sound quite different. SILA Linguists® provides Slovak interpreters, translators and transcribers for maternity and health services, schools, manufacturers and logistics firms, police, family courts, housing teams and trading businesses.

Slovak interpreting, matched to region and register

We ask the client which language they prefer and, if possible, which region they come from: a client from eastern Slovakia may communicate best with an interpreter used to eastern speech. Slovak uses formal vy and familiar ty, and our interpreters keep the register a midwife, a teacher or a family court judge would expect.

Our Slovak interpreters are prepared for maternity units and GP surgeries, school and children's services meetings, social care, warehouse and factory inductions, police interviews, family proceedings, and housing and council appointments. A Slovak interpreter can be with you in person, on the phone at any hour, or on screen in the SILA Linguists® app or the video tool your team prefers. Trade meetings and supplier visits can be handled consecutively, and larger events with simultaneous or remote simultaneous interpreting.

Slovak translation: -ová surnames and diacritics

Most Slovak women's surnames end in -ová, so a mother and son will appear with different surnames on their documents. Our translators keep every name exactly as in the identity papers and preserve all diacritics, including ľ and ô, which databases often strip out. Slovak birth and marriage certificates, police clearance certificates, school reports and court orders are certified with a signed Slovak-to-English accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as government departments, family courts and colleges, and by employers. Slovak documents for American authorities carry the translator's certificate of accuracy.

Slovakia's own official translations come from translators on the Ministry of Justice register, who bind the translation to the source and add a seal and clause, so documents heading to Slovakia may need that route. For employers and manufacturers, we translate safety rules, work instructions, contracts and staff guidance, and localise websites for Slovak customers.

Slovak transcription and subtitling

Police interview recordings, phone calls and family evidence in Slovak, including eastern dialect and Czech or Hungarian passages, are transcribed line by line with timings and an English version, and we subtitle induction and safety films.

Sectors we support in Slovak

Our vetted, trained and qualified Slovak linguists can support maternity and health services, schools and children's services, manufacturing and logistics employers, police and family courts, housing teams and councils, and businesses trading with Slovakia. SILA Linguists® gives you a named coordinator, Slovak linguists we have checked ourselves and case files kept private under NDAs and UK GDPR. Slovak interpreters can support US courts, hospitals and businesses as well as UK services.

Good to know

Working with Slovak

Interpreting

  • Ask the client which language they prefer, and if possible which region they come from. A client from eastern Slovakia may communicate best with an interpreter familiar with eastern speech. Slovak uses formal vy and familiar ty, and interpreters follow the appropriate register.
  • Slovak interpreting is often requested in healthcare, maternity, schools, social care, employment and court settings. We provide face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting.

Translation

  • Most Slovak female surnames end in -ová, so family members' names differ in documents. Translators keep names exactly as in the identity documents and preserve all diacritics, including ľ and ô, which are often lost in databases.
  • Slovak official translations are produced by translators entered in the Ministry of Justice register, who bind the translation to the source and add their seal and clause. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies; documents for Slovak authorities may need a Slovak court translation. For documents going to authorities in the United States, we arrange the certification those authorities require, including the translator's certificate of accuracy that US immigration authorities expect.
