Croatian is the official language of Croatia and one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has minority status in parts of Serbia, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Italy, and is spoken by a large diaspora. Croatian became an official EU language when Croatia joined the EU.

Croatian has three dialect groups, named after their word for 'what': Shtokavian (što), Kajkavian (kaj), spoken around Zagreb and in the north-west, and Chakavian (ča), spoken on the coast and islands. The standard language is based on ijekavian Shtokavian. Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian and Montenegrin are largely mutually intelligible, while each has its own standard, which its speakers value as their own language. Familiar differences include Croatian month names such as siječanj (January) and many native-coined terms where other standards use international words.

Croatian is written only in the Latin alphabet, with the letters č, ć, dž, đ, lj, nj, š and ž.

How we help

Croatian services

SILA Linguists®

Croatian interpreters and certified Croatian translation with SILA Linguists®

Croatian is the official language of Croatia, one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and an official EU language. It has minority status in parts of Serbia, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Italy, and a large diaspora in Germany, Austria, the Americas and Australia. SILA Linguists® provides Croatian interpreters, translators and transcribers to courts, police, solicitors, hospitals, maritime and offshore companies, tourism businesses and investors across the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

Croatian interpreting in standard Croatian

Many Croatian clients prefer an interpreter who uses standard Croatian vocabulary, especially in formal, legal and medical settings. Tell us the client's preferred language, and we will not substitute another standard without your agreement. Speakers from Zagreb, Dalmatia or Istria may use strongly regional Kajkavian, Shtokavian or Chakavian speech informally, and our interpreters are used to it and will ask for clarification where needed.

We provide face-to-face Croatian interpreters for court hearings, police interviews, solicitors' meetings, hospital appointments and family and immigration matters, with telephone interpreting available at any hour and video interpreting through our SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. For shipping, offshore and maritime operators we provide interpreters for crew interviews, incident investigations and safety briefings. For tourism, property and investment businesses we offer consecutive and simultaneous interpreting for negotiations and conferences.

Croatian translation, certification and terminology

Standard Croatian spelling and vocabulary are expected in formal documents, and our translators avoid mixing in terms from other standards. Legal and administrative terminology changed after independence, so Yugoslav-era documents may use different terms and formats, which we handle carefully. Certified translations of birth and marriage certificates, property deeds, court judgments and diplomas carry our signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as colleges and the Home Office, and by employers. Croatian documents for the United States, Canada or Australia are certified to their requirements, through NAATI-certified translators in Australia.

In Croatia, translations for official use are usually certified by a permanent court interpreter appointed by a county court, so check what a Croatian authority requires. For business, we translate contracts, maritime documentation, tourism content and marketing, and localise websites for Croatian users.

Croatian transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Croatian interviews, recorded evidence, maritime incident recordings and media with time references and an English rendering, and subtitle documentaries, travel films and corporate video.

Sectors we support in Croatian

Our vetted, trained and qualified Croatian linguists can support courts, police and solicitors, hospitals, maritime, shipping and offshore operators, tourism and hospitality groups, property and investment firms, and family and immigration practitioners. Whether the job is a crew interview in a port or a probate file from Split, SILA Linguists® assigns a named coordinator and keeps every document confidential under signed agreements and UK GDPR. Croatian interpreters can support courts, hospitals and family matters in Australia, the United States and Canada as well as the UK.

Good to know

Working with Croatian

Interpreting

  • Many Croatian clients prefer an interpreter who uses standard Croatian vocabulary, especially in formal, legal and medical settings. When booking, tell us the client's preferred language; we will not substitute another standard without your agreement.
  • Speakers from Zagreb, Dalmatia or Istria may use strongly regional speech in informal conversation. Our interpreters are used to this and will ask for clarification where needed. Video and telephone interpreting work well for Croatian, and we provide face-to-face interpreters for hearings and medical appointments.

Translation

  • Standard Croatian spelling and vocabulary are expected in all formal documents, and translators must avoid mixing in terms from other standards. Croatian legal and administrative terminology changed after independence, so older documents from the Yugoslav period may use different terms and formats.
  • In Croatia, translations for official use are usually certified by a permanent court interpreter (stalni sudski tumač) appointed by a county court. Our certified translations are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, tribunals, courts and universities, and by international bodies; for use in Croatia, check whether the authority requires a Croatian court interpreter's certification. If your documents are for use in the United States, Canada or Australia, we arrange the certification required there, from a translator's certificate of accuracy for US immigration authorities to NAATI-certified translation for Australia.
