Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Limba semnelor române (LSR) is the sign language of the Deaf community in Romania and is recognised by law as the mother tongue of Deaf people.
Limba semnelor române (LSR)
rmsLSR is a language in its own right with its own vocabulary and grammar, and Romanian law defines it that way. The older term limbaj mimico-gestual ("mime-gesture language") appears in earlier legislation and is still used in some contexts, but the Deaf community prefers limba semnelor române.
The Romanian law on Romanian Sign Language recognises LSR as the mother tongue of Deaf and hard of hearing people and covers bilingual education, interpreting and access to public services. Earlier disability legislation had already referred to sign language interpreting. The Asociația Națională a Surzilor din România represents the community. Regional variation exists between areas such as Bucharest, Cluj and Iași.

SILA Linguists® supplies LSR interpreters, signed video and captions for employers, benefits advisers, clinics, courts, police and social workers, in Romania and among Romanian Deaf people in the UK, Italy, Spain and Germany.
Regional variation exists in LSR, and many Romanian Deaf people abroad also use the host country's sign language, so we ask each person which they prefer and where they went to school. For legal and asylum appointments, a Deaf interpreter working with a hearing LSR interpreter can help where the person's schooling in sign language was limited.
We provide LSR interpreting on site and by video for job interviews and employment meetings, benefits appointments, GP and hospital visits, police interviews and court hearings, and social care meetings. Our interpreters use the vocabulary Deaf Romanians expect. Long or sensitive sessions are covered by two interpreters.
Romanian Deaf workers abroad are sometimes recruited in groups, and we can arrange a team of LSR interpreters for group inductions, health checks and union or HR meetings, keeping the same faces for follow-up appointments.
Romanian or English texts, including job contracts, benefits letters, health advice and social care correspondence, are recorded in LSR by Deaf translators, and signed LSR clips can be written up in Romanian or English. Romanian certificates of birth, marriage or education are certified by our Romanian translators.
For employers and agencies recruiting Deaf Romanian workers we can produce signed explanations of contracts, pay and safety rules, so that new staff understand their rights from the start.
Because Romanian law entitles Deaf Romanians to access public services in LSR, Romanian authorities and consulates abroad may also want signed explanations of their procedures, which we can script and film.
Romanian or English captions and transcripts can be produced for LSR videos and recorded meetings, proofread by a human.
Our vetted, trained and qualified LSR interpreters can support employers and benefits advisers, healthcare providers, courts and police, and social care services. Every LSR booking goes through one SILA Linguists® coordinator, interpreters are vetted, and Romanian Deaf clients' information stays confidential under non-disclosure agreements and UK GDPR.
