Sign language interpreting
On-site and video interpreting for appointments, meetings and events.
Magyar jelnyelv, Hungarian Sign Language, is the language of the Deaf community in Hungary and has its own law.
Magyar jelnyelv
hshHungarian Sign Language shares historical roots with Austrian and Czech sign languages from the Austro-Hungarian period but is a separate language today. It is known for marked regional variation: there are several dialects linked to the country's Deaf schools, including Budapest, Debrecen, Eger, Kaposvár, Sopron, Szeged and Vác.
The Act on Hungarian Sign Language and its use recognises it as an independent natural language and the language of the Hungarian Deaf community, and the Fundamental Law of Hungary protects it as part of Hungarian culture. A national association of Deaf and hard of hearing people represents the community.

SILA Linguists® arranges Hungarian Sign Language interpreters, signed video and captioning for hospitals, employers, lawyers and schools, both in Hungary and among Hungarian Deaf people abroad.
Because regional variation is so marked, telling us where the Deaf person went to school helps us match an interpreter who knows their signs, which is especially important for medical histories, legal matters and job interviews.
We provide Hungarian Sign Language interpreting on site and by video remote interpreting for hospital and GP appointments, employment and workplace meetings, legal consultations and court matters, and schools and training. For legal and healthcare matters outside Hungary, a Deaf relay, or relay through a hearing Hungarian interpreter, can be arranged where it suits the assignment. Long or complex sessions are covered by two interpreters working in turns.
Hungarian Deaf people working in Austria, Germany or the UK sometimes combine Hungarian Sign Language with signs from their new country. Our interpreters recognise this mixing and check meaning carefully, rather than assuming a borrowed sign carries the same sense it has at home. For job interviews and workplace reviews, we brief the interpreter on job titles, equipment and company terms in advance.
Employment contracts, health leaflets, legal notices and teaching material in Hungarian or English are turned into recorded Hungarian Sign Language by Deaf translators, while signed Hungarian clips can be rendered back into written Hungarian or English. Hungarian birth, marriage and school certificates are certified by our Hungarian language team.
Where an organisation's audience spans several regions, our Deaf translators choose widely understood signs and can add regional alternatives where meaning might otherwise be unclear.
Hungarian or English captions can be added to training sessions and recorded meetings, and transcripts record both what was signed and what was said.
Each caption file is reviewed by a person, and for live events we can add real-time captions alongside the sign language interpreters.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Hungarian Sign Language interpreters can support healthcare providers, employers, legal practitioners and educational institutions. A single SILA Linguists® coordinator handles Hungarian Sign Language bookings, interpreters are vetted, and Deaf Hungarians' personal details stay confidential under signed agreements and UK GDPR.
