Maghrebi Arabic interpreting and translation

Maghrebi Arabic is the umbrella name for the spoken Arabic of North Africa, including Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian and Libyan Arabic. These varieties differ markedly from Middle Eastern Arabic, so we match interpreters by country.

Maghrebi Arabic, also called Darija, covers the spoken Arabic varieties of the Maghreb. The four main national varieties have their own pages: Moroccan Arabic, Algerian Arabic, Tunisian Arabic and Libyan Arabic. Hassaniya Arabic, spoken in Mauritania and the western Sahara, is related and is sometimes included in the group. Maghrebi Arabic is a group of varieties rather than a single standard language, and it has no common written norm.

These varieties share features such as the n- prefix in first-person singular verbs, heavy vowel reduction, and many Berber, French, Spanish, Italian and Turkish loanwords. Neighbouring varieties are generally mutually intelligible, for example Algerian with Moroccan or Tunisian, while speakers from the Middle East often find Maghrebi Arabic hard to follow.

North Africa is home to Tamazight (Berber) languages too, and French is widely used. Large Maghrebi communities live in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, the UK and Canada.

  • Main areas: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya
  • Also used: Mauritania, Western Sahara

How we help

Maghrebi Arabic services

SILA Linguists®

Maghrebi Arabic (Darija) interpreters and translators at SILA Linguists®

Maghrebi Arabic, often called Darija, is the family of spoken Arabic varieties of North Africa: Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian and Libyan Arabic, with Hassaniya closely related. Large Maghrebi communities live in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. SILA Linguists® provides Maghrebi Arabic interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration services, courts, police, healthcare providers and social services in Britain, in Canada and the United States, and in Australia and New Zealand. Booking 'Maghrebi Arabic' helps when you know someone is from North Africa but not their exact country; whenever you can, tell us the country and we will match it.

Maghrebi Arabic interpreting by North African specialists

Neighbouring Maghrebi varieties are generally mutually intelligible, but speakers from the Middle East often find Darija hard to follow, with its vowel reduction and Berber, French, Spanish, Italian and Turkish loanwords. For legal, asylum and mental health work we therefore book interpreters from North Africa or with proven Maghrebi experience. Some clients prefer French or a Tamazight language, and we ask before confirming.

Face-to-face interpreting is available for asylum interviews, police stations, courts, hospitals, social services and schools; phone interpreting can be reached at any time, including nights and holidays; and video sessions take place on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. A female or male interpreter can be provided on request.

Translation from MSA, French and written Darija

Formal documents from the Maghreb are in Modern Standard Arabic, often with French versions, and names usually follow French-style Latin spellings. We provide certified translation of civil records, family books, ID documents, court judgments and diplomas, each signed by us as accurate, and accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, judges and universities, and by employers. For Canada we can provide translation by a provincially certified translator when an authority requires one.

Darija appears in writing mainly on social media, in advertising and in some literature, in Arabic or Latin script with no common standard. When such messages become evidence, our translators handle the informal spelling with care.

Darija transcription and LADO

Transcription and translation of recorded Darija, including speech that mixes Arabic and French, is often needed in legal and investigative work. Our transcripts carry timings and an English rendering, and each language is tagged as it occurs. SILA Linguists® can also arrange LADO and nationality assessment for Maghrebi speakers, which can help when the country of origin is disputed.

Sectors we support in Maghrebi Arabic

Our vetted, trained and qualified Maghrebi Arabic linguists can support immigration and asylum services, courts and police, healthcare providers, social services and education teams. One team coordinates bookings. Every interpreter signs a non-disclosure agreement, and data handling follows UK GDPR. Maghrebi Arabic interpreters can join Canadian refugee and immigration proceedings, provincial courts and health services as well as UK settings.

Good to know

Working with Maghrebi Arabic

Interpreting

  • Booking 'Maghrebi Arabic' is useful when you know a person is from North Africa but not their exact country. Wherever possible, tell us the country, as a Moroccan interpreter for a Moroccan client or an Algerian interpreter for an Algerian client gives the best results.
  • For legal, asylum and mental health work, avoid relying on interpreters from the Middle East for Maghrebi speakers unless they have proven North African experience.
  • Ask about the client's preferred language: some prefer French, and Amazigh speakers may prefer Tamazight.
  • We provide face-to-face, video and telephone interpreting, and LADO for Maghrebi Arabic speakers.

Translation

  • Formal documents from the Maghreb are in Modern Standard Arabic, often with French versions. Darija is used in writing mainly for social media, advertising and some literature, in Arabic or Latin script, without a common standard.
  • Transcription and translation of recorded Darija speech, including mixed Arabic and French, is a common request in legal and investigative work.
