Tunisian Arabic interpreting and translation

Tunisian Arabic, known as Tounsi or Derja, is the everyday language of Tunisia. It is a Maghrebi variety with strong French and Italian influence, and it is best interpreted by Tunisian or Maghrebi specialists.

Tunisian Arabic is spoken by almost the whole population of Tunisia. Modern Standard Arabic is the official language, and French is widely used in business, science, medicine and higher education. Tounsi borrows freely from French, Italian, Turkish, Berber and Spanish, and speakers often switch between Arabic and French in a single conversation.

The speech of Tunis is the most widely heard norm. Sahel, Sfax and southern varieties differ in pronunciation and vocabulary, and southern speech shares features with western Libyan Arabic. Tunisian is generally understood by Algerian speakers and, to a lesser extent, Moroccan speakers, but it is challenging for many Middle Eastern Arabic speakers.

How we help

Tunisian Arabic services

SILA Linguists®

Tunisian Arabic (Tounsi) interpreting and translation by SILA Linguists®

Tunisian Arabic, or Tounsi, is spoken by almost the whole population of Tunisia and by Tunisian communities in France, Italy, Germany and elsewhere. The speech of Tunis is the most widely heard norm, while Sahel, Sfax and southern varieties differ, and southern speech shares features with western Libya. SILA Linguists® provides Tunisian Arabic interpreters, translators and transcribers to immigration advisers, courts, healthcare providers, schools and tourism businesses in Britain, in North America and in Australia and New Zealand. Because Tounsi is challenging for many Middle Eastern Arabic speakers, we book Tunisian or Maghrebi specialists.

Tunisian Arabic interpreters who handle code-switching

Tunisians often move between Arabic and French within a single sentence, and Tounsi borrows readily from Italian, Turkish, Berber and Spanish. Our interpreters follow that mixture accurately. Many Tunisians are fluent in French and may prefer it for technical or medical topics, so we ask the client before confirming the language.

We provide face-to-face interpreting for family and immigration matters, court hearings, hospital and clinic appointments and school meetings, and our phone service is staffed through evenings, weekends and holidays. Video sessions can be booked on the SILA Linguists® app or on your own platform. For hotel groups, tour operators and trade missions we supply consecutive interpreters, and simultaneous interpreters for conferences.

Tunisian documents, certification and marketing copy

Tunisian official documents are in Modern Standard Arabic, often with French. Names have French-style Latin spellings that should match passports and existing records, and our translators keep them consistent. We translate birth and marriage records, family documents, court decisions, diplomas, transcripts and commercial papers, and a certified version carries our signed and dated declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as government departments, courts and universities, and by employers.

Tounsi appears in Arabic or Latin script in advertising, media and social media, and we can adapt tourism and consumer content for Tunisian audiences. Hotel groups and tour operators can also have websites, booking flows and guest information localised into French and Arabic for the Tunisian market, with human review of every page.

Transcribing recorded Tunisian speech

Courts and investigators often need recordings in Tounsi transcribed, including speech that mixes Arabic and French. We produce a time-coded transcript with each language tagged and an English version alongside. Where a person's Tunisian origin is questioned, SILA Linguists® can also arrange a language analysis (LADO) report.
