Flemish interpreting and translation

Flemish is the name commonly used for the Dutch spoken in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. We provide interpreters and translators who know Belgian usage, terminology and institutions.

Flemish is not a separate standard language. Belgium and the Netherlands share one standard Dutch, and an educated speaker from Antwerp understands one from Amsterdam without difficulty. What differs is vocabulary, pronunciation and the institutions behind the words. Belgian Dutch is one of Belgium's three official languages, with French and German, and is the language of Flanders and one of the two languages of Brussels.

Everyday speech in Flanders also includes strong regional dialects, such as West Flemish, East Flemish, Brabantian and Limburgish, and an informal in-between register often called tussentaal. West Flemish is also spoken in French Flanders around Dunkirk, where it is sometimes treated as a separate language.

How we help

Flemish services

SILA Linguists®

Flemish (Belgian Dutch) interpreters and translators with SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® provides Flemish interpreting and translation for law firms, businesses, hospitals and international institutions in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Flemish is Belgian Dutch: the same standard language as in the Netherlands, but with its own vocabulary, pronunciation and, above all, institutions. A Flemish client talking about their health insurance fund, their municipality or a Belgian court expects an interpreter who recognises those terms immediately, so we match Belgian-trained linguists wherever possible.

Flemish interpreting for business, law and healthcare

Our Flemish interpreters attend contract negotiations, board meetings, depositions, court hearings and medical consultations in person, and also work by telephone at any hour and by video through the SILA Linguists® app or your preferred platform. For conferences, product launches and EU or international meetings we provide simultaneous interpreting, including remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI), as well as consecutive interpreting for smaller groups.

Everyday Flemish speech includes strong regional dialects, West Flemish, East Flemish, Brabantian and Limburgish, plus an informal in-between register known as tussentaal. West Flemish is also heard in French Flanders around Dunkirk. Tell us if your speaker has a pronounced regional accent and we will brief the interpreter. Many Flemish professionals speak excellent French and English, but formal hearings and clinical conversations should still take place in the language they prefer.

Belgian Dutch translation and certified translation

Legal, tax and employment terminology differs between Belgium and the Netherlands, so we ask which country your readers are in and translate accordingly. Typical work includes commercial contracts, articles of association, court judgments, employment documents, technical manuals, tender files and patient records, from Flemish into English and from English into Belgian Dutch.

Certified Flemish translation with a signed statement of accuracy is accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and by employers. For companies entering the Flemish market we also localise websites, software and marketing campaigns so they read naturally to Belgian customers rather than sounding imported from Amsterdam.

Transcription and subtitling

We transcribe Flemish meetings, interviews, podcasts and recorded evidence with time stamps and English translation, and we subtitle corporate and training video for Belgian audiences, with dialect passages handled by linguists who know them. Recorded witness interviews and call-centre audio for compliance reviews are typical examples, alongside market research focus groups held in Antwerp, Ghent or Brussels.

Settings for our linguists in Flemish

Our vetted, trained and qualified Flemish linguists can support law firms and courts, finance and insurance, engineering, logistics, healthcare, universities, recruitment and EU-facing organisations. You work with one project team, and our vetted linguists sign confidentiality agreements and follow UK GDPR on every file.

Good to know

Working with Flemish

Interpreting

  • Belgian clients usually prefer an interpreter who knows Belgian Dutch. Words for public bodies, courts, tax and health insurance differ from those in the Netherlands, and a Belgian-trained interpreter will recognise them. Tell us if the speaker uses a strong regional dialect, particularly West Flemish, so we can match the right linguist.
  • Flemish professionals are often fluent in French and English, but formal hearings and medical consultations should still use the language the person prefers. Conference, video and telephone interpreting are all available.

Translation

  • Translations for Belgian readers should follow Belgian Dutch conventions and terminology, for example in legal, tax and employment documents, rather than Netherlands usage. Tell us the target country so terms and formats are right. Certified translations, with a signed statement of accuracy, are accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities, and by international bodies. Belgian Dutch documents can be translated into English and other languages.
