Catalan is the sole official language of Andorra and is co-official with Spanish in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, where it is officially called Valencian. It is also spoken in the eastern fringe of Aragon, in the French department of Pyrénées-Orientales and in Alghero in Sardinia. Most speakers are bilingual with Spanish, French or Italian.

The language is usually divided into eastern varieties (including central Catalan, Balearic and Alguerese) and western varieties (including north-western Catalan and Valencian). Two bodies maintain the standard: the Institut d'Estudis Catalans and, for Valencian, the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua. Their norms are compatible, but differ in preferred verb forms, vocabulary and some spellings.

Catalan uses the Latin alphabet with accented vowels, the cedilla (ç) and the distinctive middle dot in l·l, as in col·legi.

How we help

Catalan services

SILA Linguists®

Catalan and Valencian translation and interpreting from SILA Linguists®

Catalan is the sole official language of Andorra and co-official with Spanish in Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community, where it is officially called Valencian. It is also spoken in eastern Aragon, in the Pyrénées-Orientales of France and in Alghero in Sardinia. SILA Linguists® provides Catalan translators, interpreters and transcribers to law firms and notaries, regional and local government, universities, tourism and retail brands, software companies and publishers across the UK, Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and further afield, always writing for the right regional standard.

Catalan interpreting for courts, institutions and business

Catalan is used day to day in courts, public administration and education in Catalan-speaking areas, so legal and institutional assignments may involve proceedings or documents in Catalan. Most clients also speak Spanish, but some prefer Catalan for important conversations, and in some proceedings they are entitled to use it. Our interpreters handle notarial signings, court hearings, police matters and meetings with lawyers with equal ease.

For conferences, cultural events, trade fairs and business meetings we provide Catalan with English, Spanish or French, consecutive or simultaneous, including remote simultaneous interpreting for hybrid events. Telephone interpreting is available at any hour for urgent calls, and video interpreting runs through the SILA Linguists® video app or your own platform. Speakers of Balearic, Valencian or north-western varieties are matched with interpreters who know their speech.

Catalan translation, localisation and sworn requirements

Choosing the right standard matters. Material for the Valencian Community or the Balearic Islands may need Valencian or Balearic forms, while material for Catalonia normally follows the central Catalan standard. Tell us your audience and we translate accordingly. Catalan is widely used for website, software and app localisation, e-commerce, tourism and retail, and we combine expert translators with AI-assisted translation and human post-editing for large catalogues.

Certified translations from Catalan into English, for property deeds, notarial acts, court judgments, academic records and civil documents, carry a signed accuracy statement, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals and the Home Office, and by HR departments. In Catalonia the regional government appoints its own sworn translators, and Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs keeps a separate register, so check what a Spanish authority requires; we can advise on the English side.

Catalan transcription and subtitling

For broadcasters, publishers and arts organisations, we transcribe and subtitle Catalan film, television, podcasts and interviews, with English, Spanish or Catalan subtitles timed to broadcast standards. Researchers receive time-coded transcripts with translation.

Sectors we support in Catalan

Our vetted, trained and qualified Catalan linguists can support courts, notaries and lawyers, regional and local government, universities and schools, tourism, hospitality and retail, technology companies, and publishing, media and the arts. SILA Linguists® provides one dedicated project contact, and signed confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR protect your material.
