Catalan Sign Language (LSC) interpreting and translation

Llengua de signes catalana (LSC) is the sign language of the Deaf community in Catalonia, recognised by a Catalan law.

LSC is distinct from Spanish Sign Language (LSE), though the two share history and some vocabulary and Deaf people in Catalonia often have contact with both. LSC is not a signed form of Catalan.

The Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia refers to LSC, and a Catalan law on Catalan Sign Language regulates its use, teaching and interpreting. At Spanish state level, national law recognises the Spanish sign languages, naming both LSE and LSC. The Federació de Persones Sordes de Catalunya (FESOCA) represents the Deaf community.

How we help

Catalan Sign Language services

SILA Linguists®

Catalan Sign Language (LSC) interpreting and LSC video from SILA Linguists®

Llengua de signes catalana, LSC, is the sign language of Deaf people in Catalonia, with some users in Andorra. It is distinct from Spanish Sign Language (LSE), though the two share history and some vocabulary, and it is not a signed form of Catalan. Catalan law regulates its use, teaching and interpreting. SILA Linguists® provides LSC interpreting, video translation and captioning for public administration, hospitals, courts, universities, schools and cultural events, in Catalonia and wherever Catalan Deaf people travel or work.

LSC or LSE? Booking the right interpreter

Most Deaf people born and educated in Catalonia use LSC, but some have more contact with LSE, so we ask before every booking. Catalan institutions increasingly expect LSC rather than a generic Spanish solution.

We provide LSC interpreting on site and by video for meetings with public administration, hospital and primary care appointments, court proceedings, university classes and examinations, school meetings, and cultural events such as festivals, theatre and museum tours. Team interpreting is advisable for long meetings and conferences, and a Deaf interpreter can support legal and mental health appointments. Please tell us the dates and location when you book.

The legal framework is unusually clear: both Catalan and Spanish law recognise LSC alongside LSE. Public bodies in Catalonia therefore often need LSC specifically, and we plan interpreting for consultations, public hearings and accessible events with that in mind, including co-working teams for full-day sessions.

Translating Catalan, Spanish or English texts into LSC

We produce recorded LSC versions of written material, such as public notices, patient information, university regulations, exhibition texts and website content, working with Deaf translators, and we translate signed LSC video into written Catalan, Spanish or English. Civil and academic documents in Catalan or Spanish are translated and certified by our Spanish and Catalan teams.

Captions and transcripts

Video content, lectures and cultural programmes can be captioned in Catalan, Spanish or English, and we produce written transcripts of recorded meetings that include signing, checked by a person before delivery. For festivals and live performances we can also arrange interpreters positioned on stage or shown on screen.

Where we can help in LSC

Our vetted, trained and qualified LSC interpreters can support Catalan public administration, healthcare providers, courts, universities and schools, and cultural organisations. SILA Linguists® coordinates interpreters and Deaf professionals through one project team, works only with vetted linguists, and protects every booking with confidentiality agreements and UK GDPR.

Good to know

Working with Catalan Sign Language

Interpreting

  • For appointments in Catalonia, ask whether the Deaf person uses LSC or LSE; most Deaf people born and educated in Catalonia use LSC. We provide LSC interpreting on site and by video; tell us the dates and location when you book.
  • Team interpreting is advisable for long meetings and conferences. A Deaf interpreter can support legal and mental health appointments. For events with international Deaf participants in Barcelona, International Sign may be needed in addition to LSC.

Translation

  • Written content can be translated into filmed LSC, with captions in Catalan or Spanish. Public bodies in Catalonia often need accessible information in LSC alongside written Catalan, which we can coordinate with our Catalan and Spanish translation teams.
