Galician is a Romance language of north-western Spain, co-official with Spanish in Galicia. SILA Linguists provides Galician interpreting and translation for public administration, legal work, education, culture and business.
galego
glgGalician is spoken in the autonomous community of Galicia, where it is co-official with Spanish, and in neighbouring districts of Asturias, León and Zamora. Large Galician communities emigrated to Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Switzerland and other countries, and Galician cultural associations remain active abroad.
Galician and Portuguese developed from the same medieval language, Galician-Portuguese, and remain very close. The official standard is set by the Real Academia Galega with the Instituto da Lingua Galega, using spelling conventions close to Spanish. A reintegrationist movement favours spelling closer to Portuguese and regards Galician and Portuguese as one language. We follow the official standard unless a client asks otherwise.
Dialects are usually grouped as western, central and eastern, with differences in pronunciation and vocabulary. Most Galician speakers are bilingual with Spanish.

Galician, galego, is co-official with Spanish in the autonomous community of Galicia and is spoken in neighbouring districts of Asturias, León and Zamora, with emigrant communities in Argentina, Uruguay, Cuba, Switzerland and beyond keeping Galician cultural associations alive. It grew from the same medieval Galician-Portuguese as Portuguese and remains very close to it. SILA Linguists® provides Galician translators, interpreters and transcribers to regional government, courts and lawyers, universities, cultural and publishing organisations, and tourism, fisheries and food businesses in the UK, North America, Australia, New Zealand and further afield.
Galician interpreting is used where speakers wish to use their own language in court, public administration, healthcare and cultural events, and for interviews with older speakers in rural areas, some of whom are more comfortable in Galician than in Spanish. Researchers recording oral history in the villages of Lugo or Ourense often need exactly this support.
We provide Galician with English or Spanish face to face, by video through the SILA Linguists® app or Teams, Zoom or similar, by telephone at any hour, and for conferences with consecutive or simultaneous interpreting, including remote simultaneous interpreting for hybrid events. For fisheries and food producers we provide interpreters for trade fairs, buyer visits and inspections, and for cultural organisations at festivals, book launches and music events linking Galicia with other Atlantic regions.
The Xunta de Galicia and other public bodies publish in Galician and Spanish, and many organisations need bilingual material. We translate according to the official Galician standard and adapt terminology for specific sectors, from fisheries regulation and food labelling to legal and academic texts. For tourism boards and hospitality businesses we localise websites, brochures and booking platforms into Galician and English.
Certified translations from Galician into English, covering court documents, notarial acts, academic records and civil certificates, carry our signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by the Home Office, tribunals and other UK authorities.
We transcribe Galician interviews, oral history, radio and research recordings with time codes and translate them into English or Spanish, and subtitle Galician film and documentary for festivals and international distribution. Songs and poetry, central to Galician culture, can be given both a literal English version and a freer literary rendering.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Galician linguists can support regional government and public services, courts and law firms, universities and researchers, music, culture and publishing organisations, and tourism, fisheries and food companies. SILA Linguists® coordinates each project through one contact and keeps material confidential under signed agreements and UK GDPR.
