The name Ñandeva causes confusion. In Paraguay it refers to the Guarani Ñandeva people of the Chaco, in the department of Boquerón, who are known in Bolivia and Argentina as Tapieté. Their language, Tapieté, is a Tupi-Guarani language closely related to the Guarani of eastern Bolivia. In Brazil, by contrast, Ñandeva or Nhandeva usually refers to the Ava Guarani (Chiripá) people of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, who speak a different variety.

The Tapieté are a small community. They speak a Guarani language but share much of the way of life of their Chaco neighbours, and many members also speak Spanish and other regional languages. Guarani Ñandeva are counted among the peoples of the Guarani linguistic family in Paraguay.

How we help

Guarani Ñandeva services

SILA Linguists®

Guarani Ñandeva (Tapieté) interpreting and translation with SILA Linguists®

SILA Linguists® helps healthcare teams, legal advisers, researchers and community organisations communicate with speakers of Guarani Ñandeva. The name needs care. In Paraguay it refers to the Guarani Ñandeva people of the Chaco, in the department of Boquerón, known in Bolivia and Argentina as Tapieté; in Brazil, Ñandeva usually means the Ava Guarani of Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraná, who speak a different variety. Before we book anyone, we establish exactly which community the speaker belongs to.

Interpreting for Tapieté and Ñandeva speakers

A speaker from the Paraguayan Chaco, or from Tarija in Bolivia or Salta in Argentina, will usually need Tapieté or Spanish. A Ñandeva speaker from Brazil will need an Ava Guarani interpreter and may also speak Portuguese. Where the person is comfortable with it, Paraguayan Guarani can be another route, but we check understanding with the client instead of assuming it.

Qualified linguists for this small community are few, so remote interpreting is usually the practical choice: telephone sessions, available round the clock, or video through the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. We recommend short, clearly structured sessions, especially for health appointments in the Chaco region or identity and legal matters, and we can arrange relay through Spanish so that every party hears an accurate version.

Translation and certified documents

Tapieté has a limited written tradition, with most materials coming from linguistic documentation and community projects. For written communication we usually suggest Spanish or Paraguayan Guarani, backed by an audio recording or a spoken explanation of the key points, and we can produce both.

Identity papers, birth certificates and legal documents from Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina are issued in Spanish. We provide certified translations from Spanish into English with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as courts, the Home Office and universities, and translate English documents into Spanish or Guarani for the people they affect.

Transcription for research and documentation

Linguists and anthropologists studying the Chaco often record interviews and narratives in Tapieté with passages in Spanish or neighbouring languages. We provide time-stamped transcripts and English translations, marking each language clearly, with transcribers who know the Guarani family of languages. Recordings made in community settings, with background noise and several voices at once, are handled patiently, and unclear passages are flagged rather than guessed.

Sectors we support in Guarani Ñandeva

Our vetted, trained and qualified Guarani Ñandeva linguists can support health programmes in the Chaco, community consultations, legal and identity matters, universities and documentation projects, and charities working with Indigenous peoples. With a community this small, confidentiality is essential: every SILA Linguists® linguist signs a confidentiality agreement and works under UK GDPR, and one project team manages the whole assignment.

Interpreting

  • Before booking, confirm where the person is from: a speaker from the Paraguayan Chaco is likely to need Tapieté or Spanish, while a Ñandeva speaker from Brazil will need an Ava Guarani interpreter and may also speak Portuguese. We can also work through Spanish or, where the speaker is comfortable with it, Paraguayan Guarani. We check comprehension rather than assume it.
  • Remote interpreting by telephone or video is usually the most practical way to reach a qualified linguist, and short, clear sessions work best.

Translation

  • Tapieté has a limited written tradition, with materials produced mainly through linguistic documentation and community projects. For written communication we usually recommend Spanish or Paraguayan Guarani, with audio or face-to-face explanation of key information where needed.
