Cantonese interpreting and translation

Cantonese is the everyday language of Hong Kong, Macao and much of southern China, and the historic language of many overseas Chinese communities. We provide Cantonese interpreters and translators into Traditional or Simplified Chinese.

Cantonese belongs to the Yue group of Sinitic languages. It is not mutually intelligible with Mandarin when spoken: the two differ in sounds, tones (Cantonese is usually described as having six contrasting tones), vocabulary and some grammar. The prestige form is the speech of Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Other Yue varieties, such as Taishanese, which was common among early emigrants to North America, differ further still.

In Hong Kong and Macao, Cantonese is used in government, courts, schools and media alongside English or Portuguese, and Mandarin is increasingly taught. In Guangdong and Guangxi, Cantonese is widely spoken in daily life, while Mandarin is the language of education and administration. Long-established Chinese communities in the UK, Canada, Australia and elsewhere have often been predominantly Cantonese-speaking, and there has been recent migration from Hong Kong to the UK.

How we help

Cantonese services

SILA Linguists®

Cantonese interpreters and translators from SILA Linguists®

Long-established Chinese communities in Britain, Canada and Australia have often been Cantonese-speaking, and recent arrivals from Hong Kong have added to demand. SILA Linguists® provides Cantonese interpreting, translation, transcription and subtitling for healthcare, legal, education and business work wherever they operate. Cantonese and Mandarin are different spoken languages, so we never substitute one for the other, and we ask whether the client is from Hong Kong, Macao, Guangdong or Guangxi, or speaks Taishanese or Hakka, before matching an interpreter.

Cantonese interpreting for every kind of appointment

Face-to-face Cantonese interpreters attend hospital outpatient clinics, care homes, police interviews, magistrates' and crown courts, immigration appointments and school meetings. Our telephone interpreting service is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting is available through the SILA Linguists® app or Zoom, Teams and similar platforms. For board meetings, investor events and conferences with Hong Kong partners we provide consecutive, simultaneous and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Hong Kong speakers often mix English words into Cantonese, and our interpreters carry that through naturally without losing meaning. Older clients from rural Guangdong or early migrant families may speak Taishanese or Hakka at home; tell us what you know and we will match a linguist who understands them. Elderly care and dementia services particularly benefit from an interpreter who shares the client's variety.

Translating Chinese for Cantonese readers

Formal documents in Hong Kong and Macao are written in Standard Written Chinese and read aloud with Cantonese pronunciation, while informal written Cantonese, with characters such as 嘅, 咗 and 佢, appears in advertising, social media and transcripts of speech. We choose the right register for your purpose and use Traditional characters for Hong Kong and Macao readers and Simplified for readers from mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore, adjusting vocabulary to Hong Kong usage where needed.

Our translators work into and out of English on Hong Kong identity cards, education records, birth and marriage certificates, contracts, financial statements and marketing. Certified Cantonese translation comes with a signed statement of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities such as the Home Office, courts and universities. Hong Kong and Guangdong records bound for the United States, Canada or Australia receive the certification each authority sets, NAATI-certified translation included.

Cantonese transcription and subtitling

Our transcribers are experienced with Cantonese media. We transcribe interviews, recorded evidence, focus groups and broadcast content with time stamps, then translate into English or subtitle in English or Chinese. Transcribers flag code-switching between Cantonese, English and Mandarin so that the record is precise.

Settings for our linguists in Cantonese

Our vetted, trained and qualified Cantonese linguists can support NHS and private healthcare, elderly care providers, criminal and family courts, police forces, solicitors, immigration advisers, schools and universities, banks, insurers, property firms and media producers. You speak to one project team, the linguists are vetted and work under confidentiality agreements, and data is protected under UK GDPR. Our Cantonese interpreters can support immigration lawyers, courts and hospitals in Canada, the United States and Australia, where Cantonese-speaking communities are long established.

Good to know

Working with Cantonese

Interpreting

  • Do not book a Mandarin interpreter for a Cantonese speaker, or vice versa. Many Hong Kong residents also speak Mandarin and English, but people should be able to use the language they are most at ease in, especially in medical and legal settings.
  • Some older clients from rural Guangdong or early migrant families speak Hakka or Taishanese rather than standard Cantonese. Tell us if you know the client's background.
  • Cantonese speech often mixes in English words, especially among Hong Kong speakers. Interpreters need to handle this naturally without dropping meaning.
  • Cantonese interpreters are available for face-to-face, video and telephone work, including conference and remote simultaneous interpreting.

Translation

  • Cantonese is a spoken language: formal documents in Hong Kong and Macao are written in Standard Written Chinese, which is read aloud in Cantonese pronunciation. A separate informal written Cantonese, with its own characters such as 嘅, 咗 and 佢, appears in advertising, social media and transcripts of speech.
  • Traditional characters suit readers in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan; Simplified characters suit readers in mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore. We also adapt vocabulary to Hong Kong usage when the audience is Hong Kong, since some terms differ from mainland usage.
  • We translate Hong Kong identity, education and civil documents for certified use, and transcribe and subtitle Cantonese audio and video.
