Tatar belongs to the Kipchak branch of the Turkic languages, and its closest relative is Bashkir. It is co-official with Russian in Tatarstan, whose capital is Kazan, and is also spoken in Bashkortostan, Moscow, the wider Volga-Ural region and Siberia, in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and other former Soviet states, and by smaller long-established communities in Finland and Turkey. Crimean Tatar, despite the shared name, is a different Turkic language with its own history and standard.

Linguists usually describe three dialect groups: the Middle or Kazan dialect, on which the literary language is based; the Western or Mishar dialect; and the Eastern dialects of Siberia, which some treat as a separate Siberian Tatar language. Almost all Tatar speakers in Russia are bilingual in Russian, and many younger city dwellers use Russian more at work and school.

How we help

Tatar services

SILA Linguists®

Tatar interpreters and Tatar translation services by SILA Linguists®

Tatar is a Kipchak Turkic language, co-official with Russian in Tatarstan, whose capital is Kazan, and spoken in Bashkortostan, Moscow, the Volga-Ural region and Siberia, as well as in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Finland and Turkey. Crimean Tatar, despite the name, is a different language. SILA Linguists® provides Tatar interpreters, translators and transcribers for immigration advisers, healthcare providers, legal teams, businesses trading with Tatarstan and academic projects in Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. We ask whether the client comes from Kazan, a Mishar-speaking area or Siberia, and which other languages they use.

Tatar or Russian? Interpreting that fits the client

Almost all Tatar speakers in Russia are bilingual in Russian, and many younger city dwellers use Russian more at work, so a Russian interpreter is often booked for official matters. Tatar is the better choice for older clients from rural areas, for people who want to give a sensitive account in their mother tongue, and for cultural, academic or business work linked to Tatarstan. Tatar, Bashkir and Kazakh are related, but we never assume a speaker of one will follow another.

The literary language is based on the Middle or Kazan dialect, while the Western or Mishar dialect and the Eastern dialects of Siberia differ, and we match accordingly. Our Tatar interpreters work face to face at visa and immigration appointments, hospital visits, police interviews and legal meetings, by telephone at any time of day or night, and by video on the SILA Linguists® app or your own platform. For trade delegations and academic conferences we provide consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

Tatar translation in Cyrillic and Latin script

Tatar is written in Cyrillic with six additional letters, ә, ө, ү, җ, ң and һ. It has used Arabic script and a Latin alphabet in the past, and a modern Latin alphabet is still used by some writers and online. Cyrillic is the official script in Russia, so we confirm with you who will read the text before choosing.

Most official documents issued in Russia, including in Tatarstan, are in Russian, so certified translation often involves Russian as well. We translate birth and marriage certificates, diplomas, contracts, company documents and cultural and academic texts, certifying each with a signed declaration of accuracy, accepted by UK authorities, universities and employers. Russian or Tatar papers for authorities in the United States or Canada are certified in the form they require.

Tatar transcription and subtitling

We transcribe interviews, recorded meetings, oral history and broadcast material in Tatar, with timings, Russian passages labelled and an English version alongside. Cultural organisations and universities can also have Tatar films and lectures subtitled in English.

Sectors we support in Tatar

Our vetted, trained and qualified Tatar linguists can support immigration and visa advisers, healthcare providers, legal and police teams, companies doing business with Tatarstan, and academic and cultural projects. A single coordinator manages each request, linguists are vetted and sign non-disclosure agreements, and personal data stays protected under UK GDPR. Tatar interpreters can assist immigration, legal and medical appointments in the US and Canada as well as in Britain.

Good to know

Working with Tatar

Interpreting

  • Because so many Tatars are fluent in Russian, a Russian interpreter is often booked for official matters. Tatar is the better choice for older clients from rural areas, for people who want to give a sensitive account in their mother tongue, and for cultural, academic or business work linked to Tatarstan. Tell us whether the client comes from Kazan, a Mishar-speaking area or Siberia, and which other languages they use.
  • Tatar, Bashkir and Kazakh are related, but speakers should not be assumed to follow one another fully in formal settings. Telephone and video interpreting are practical, and face-to-face and conference interpreting are also available.

Translation

  • Tatar is written in Cyrillic with six additional letters: ә, ө, ү, җ, ң and һ. It used the Arabic script and then, briefly, a Latin alphabet before Cyrillic was introduced, and a modern Latin alphabet is still used by some writers and online. Cyrillic is the official script in Russia. Most official documents issued in Russia, including in Tatarstan, are in Russian, so certified translation often involves Russian as well. Tell us who will read the text so that we choose the right script and terminology.
