Sylheti is the home language of most British Bangladeshis and of millions of people in north-eastern Bangladesh and India. We provide Sylheti interpreters and translators for health, legal, education and community settings.

sylSylheti is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken in the Sylhet Division of north-eastern Bangladesh and in neighbouring parts of India, especially the Barak Valley of Assam. It is closely related to Bengali (Bangla), and many speakers consider it a dialect of Bengali, while others treat it as a separate language. Both views are common, and the practical point is simple: Sylheti and Standard Bengali differ enough in sounds, grammar and everyday words that a speaker of one may struggle to follow the other in detailed conversation.
Sylheti is especially important in the United Kingdom. Most people of Bangladeshi heritage in Britain trace their families to Sylhet, and Sylheti is the everyday spoken language in many homes in London, Birmingham, Oldham, Bradford, Luton and elsewhere, as well as in communities in the United States and the Gulf states. Older and first-generation speakers may have limited English and limited literacy in Standard Bengali, which is why spoken interpreting matters far more here than written Sylheti.
Sylheti had its own script, Sylheti Nagri, used for popular poetry and religious texts from at least the 18th century. It fell out of everyday use in the 20th century and has been revived by enthusiasts, and it is now encoded in Unicode. Most Sylheti speakers who write today do so in Standard Bengali using the Bengali script.

Most British Bangladeshi families trace their roots to Sylhet, and Sylheti is the everyday home language in many households. SILA Linguists® provides Sylheti interpreters and transcribers for health services, schools, councils, police and legal teams across Britain, North America, Australia and New Zealand. When a client speaks Sylheti at home, book a Sylheti interpreter rather than a Bengali one: the two differ enough in sounds, grammar and everyday words that symptoms, dates and family details can easily be misunderstood, particularly with older clients.
Our Sylheti interpreters attend GP surgeries, hospitals and maternity units, schools and parents' meetings, housing and social services appointments, mental health and safeguarding meetings, police interviews, solicitors' offices and courts. Telephone interpreting is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and video interpreting works via our SILA Linguists® app or your organisation's own video software.
Gender matching is often requested, especially for maternity, gynaecology and safeguarding appointments, and we can provide a woman or a man to interpret on request. Speech varies between Sylhet's districts and between generations: British-born speakers mix in English, while recent arrivals may use more Standard Bengali words. Telling us about the client's background helps us choose well. Consecutive interpreting suits most appointments, with simultaneous interpreting available for community events.
Sylheti is mainly spoken, so written material is usually translated into Standard Bengali in Bengali script. For readers with limited literacy, a recorded Sylheti audio message or a sight translation read aloud by an interpreter often works far better than a leaflet. Sylheti Nagri, the historic script now being revived, can be used for heritage and cultural projects once the audience is confirmed.
Bangladeshi birth certificates, marriage records and school certificates are issued in Bengali or English, and our certified translations carry a formal signed statement that the translation is accurate, accepted by UK authorities such as tribunals, Home Office caseworkers and admissions teams, and by HR departments. Bengali documents needed by American immigration carry a translator's signed certificate of accuracy.
Transcribing Sylheti needs a linguist who knows the spoken language intimately, so we assign Sylheti speakers to police interviews, recorded calls, safeguarding evidence and research recordings. Transcripts come with time-coding and an English rendering, with switches into English or Standard Bengali clearly marked.
Our vetted, trained and qualified Sylheti linguists can support NHS trusts, health visitors, schools, local authorities, housing associations, police forces, criminal and family solicitors and community organisations, as well as dementia services and carers supporting first-generation elders who may now speak little English. With SILA Linguists®, one case coordinator handles your bookings, and our vetted interpreters work under strict confidentiality undertakings and UK data protection law, so families can speak freely. Sylheti interpreting is available for US immigration attorneys, courts, hospitals and schools, mostly by video or telephone.
